Re-incubating after casing Q
    #2017496 - 10/17/03 10:52 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

After you case a cake, say, in a tupperware container. Does it need vent holes? Or should it just be fanned, as it would once the myc took over the casing layer? If it needs vent holes, should they be covered with foil?
Thanks

case, cover with tin foil, poke a few random holes in the tin foil, place back in incubator for a few days, patch case the first aggreive mycelium to allow the rest to catch up, once casing has a good amount of mycelium coverage place in fruiting chamber, fan couple times a day, patience, then harvest mushrooms, eat, trip, send me a print and some mushies, repeat as necessary

So it's OK to open to fan? (I'll probably use the OT)
Also, if covering with foil, should I not use the tupperware lid?
If I don't use the lid, is it possible to add it, so the dish is it's own terrarium?? Thanks
If I succeed, I would send you a print. Sorry, but no scoobs.

I like saran wrap better, but that's just me. You could use the tupperware lid when running the casing -- you want some CO2 to build up, but you still need to fan to prevent contam. I fan about every other day when running the casing (if there is a good amount of air for the substrate -- if there isn't that much air you need to fan more.) Best way to tell is it should get a bit warm and stinky, but the smell shouldn't be overpowering. If you get a wine-like smell fan more often -- this is yeast. The mycelium does make its own smell, though -- you should get to know it. When I fruit them I fan every day.

No vent holes are needed for a casing, but drainage holes in the bottom can help.
