    #20174461 - 06/23/14 04:47 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

just stumbled across these.....some of the caps are the usual gold ish color but many are blackish....are these still worth anybody's time?  OR are they junk?  Thanks.  Apologies in advance for the weak pictures but I believe they get the point across.

Black could be bad or it could not be, if you leave them with no air before they dry they go black really fast but if they aren't slimy they should be fine, if not they're spoiled and so yeah, food poisoning. Have had ones that looked bad work out fine, but they were ones I watched grow every few hours along the way so I was pretty confident there wasn't something nasty on them :P Just depends on if you're feeling lucky.

Might be spores dropped on the caps. They look fine to me. Notice how most of the black coloration is primarily under the caps in the gill area.

I know it's been a few days, but I also wanted to add that if you look at the tallest mushroom of that bunch that it doesn't have the black(spores) substance on it. This is clearly because it was one of the taller ones of the group that didn't have a taller mushroom towering above it to drop it's spores on it. It dropped it's spores onto the caps of all the shorter ones surrounding it. Those mushies are fine to eat. Now, if they become mushy/squishy & black, and/or smell bad you should def toss them.

Just to clarify you can have black spores on the tallest mushroom cap. The spores are going to drop and float in the air. I have even seem stop motion of when the spores shoot out so hard that the will launch above the cap and land on it.

Yes, spores can indeed find their way onto the tallest mushrooms, but a lot of the spores will be concentrated onto the stems & shorter mushrooms that are in the spore releasing caps trajectory path
