Nice one Olive, looking good. Hope those others explode soon, my patches were going nuts 2 weeks ago!

deton8 said: This thread is amazing. Very inspiring Olive! Any chance you could answer a couple of questions for me. I'm having trouble trying to find the answers online... I have put some sub butts in a dampened cardboard taco and have them indoors at the moment. I read that you said previously to keep them indoors, but that mycelium grows quicker in colder temps. Should I put them in my laundry which is much colder than the rest of the house? And I think I read to open the bag with the cardboard taco every day to give it some fresh air? Should I mist spray the cardboard at all to keep it damp? I wasn't even sure how damp the cardboard should be initially and I'm worried it wasn't damp enough. I gave it a good soak and then left it to drain while I went out for a quick hunt (I'm lucky enough to be able to walk out the back and have some good habitat to forage amongst!). You have inspired me to get a lovely outdoor patch in motion for next year so I would love any advice you can give. I've read through so many of your posts and have learnt so much already. So a massive thanks for sharing all this info with us!
*****just re-read the previous page where you said to keep the bag open slightly and mist if it gets dry, so sorry for asking again! So does this mean that I keep the sandwich bag slightly open for as long as the cardboard taco is in there? And then as soon as the cardboard is nicely covered in myc I chuck it in the outside tub? Thanks again!
Yes I have found colder is better. Airing with misting had fastest growth. Usually I soak the cardboard, let water run off and then give it a tiny squeeze so a little bit of extra water comes out.

Goodluck
I have found that starting it in a plastic tub outdoors to be the best. Chuck in a layer of big chips to fill up the bottom 10cm (for excess water, don't want to waste mycelium). Then mix (in a different tub) all the mycelium off picked mushroom bases with big chips. Add this mix to the tub (hopefully its 80% full now). Then add another 5-10cm layer of chips on top. Fill the tub with water and place on a slight slant then drill a hole in the bottom corner to let water out. Place in a damp area. Water it every couple of days. After a few months expand it to a couple of tubs and then when they are done layer the patch in the same manner.
Hope I haven't missed anything... ill edit if I remember

I agree, growing spawn outside is totally the way to go. I differ from you sexy by using flower pots instead of tubs. It all works though .

Yeah anything that hold chips i guess haha. A pot does have less area around the edges for the same amount of chips which is preferable Not clay though! Yeah allows bacteria and other microbes needed for fruiting into the mix.

This has got to be the best thread ive read so far. Ive got 5 fish bins started (layer with pinecones for drainage then mulch then myc chips then another layer of mulch then some black layer sheets with holes drilled and bricks ontop) ive rigged up a spray system but yet to get a timer for this
Also have 2 icecream containers with about 20 stem butts doing nicely so far. I cant help myself and check daily lol. Pumping so far.
And just yesterday decided to start some small fruiting tubs which ive put in a layer of cardboard then myc chip mix and onother layer of cardboard which I have sitting in the dark on top of a beer heat pad that I put on at night then air during the day. Ill see how that one goes
You guys are totally inspirational and I hope I can get my subs pumping over here in New Zealand and maybe get some local patches thriving again.
I plan on growing some strawberries in my tubs in the off season to promote growth and so my neighbour in the 2 stoey house doesnt suspect anything dodgey haha

Ya man straw berries are perfect for this.
My sub patch is looking awesome finally!! It has taken them a few years to get used to it up here but now they are thriving. Stoked to have olive's strain !!

You guys are all in ozzy aye? So to get his strain did you manage to get ahold of some of his either myc, stem butts or mushroom culture? Because dont the spores possibly produce different genetics to the parent?
Pretty new at this but the more I read the more I understand.
Ive not seen anybody in New Zealand.... actually anybody haha grow on such a grand scale as olive
It does seem pretty hard yet fairly easy all at the same time aslong as you have a little patience and do your research. I dont like to ask too many questions which inspires me to read a little more. Then....Boom!!! I come across the likes of you guys and this thread

And yes go the strawberries haha im guessing it will make for a good disguise so my neighbors dont start thinking the worst of me while I set up sprayers, timers etc haha
I need to find a good file converter for my s4 if anybody has an idea? so I can upload a pic or 2 just to show my small time grow project

I totally agree with you. I honestly have nothing to lose but so much to gain except a couple dollars spent on some mulch, The rest ive had laying around home or at work
Kinda feel like a bit of a macguyver setting up the spray system haha and its all been good fun so far.
Nothing beats the thrill of the hunt and the trek through the bush or even the local park, but it would be great to have a personal patch to pick from where I can let those badboys flourish into their full potential without the worry of others picking from the same patch before they get a chance to mature aye.
I cant wait to see if I am as successful as one of you master cultivators one day

Just be careful with growing those sort of plants in the patch. A couple of years ago I planted legumes in a patch to increase the water retention and humidity. I also planted basil in another patch as I ran out of room. They finished their cycle come winter and died as expected. The plants were broken down and created a soil in between many of the wood chips which seemed to prevent the mycelium from growing. No fruit from that patch ever again. All the other ones did really well that winter... Its fine if there is a big eucalyptus tree over the patch as the leaves and branches seem to be colonized by the mycelium, other plants don't seem to be such a good idea. Just be careful

Thats very interesting. Maybe I will just stack them in a dark corner untill next season then. Its not like anybody will see anything thats illegal untill the season comes around again anyway.
So does anybody know of any plant that I could possibly grow that may have a symbiotic relationship with mycelium growth? Also my tubs are just straight mulch and ponecones crushed with no potting mix...is that ok? And do I need a casing layer come next season?
And do I need all the mycelium to colonise the chip this season to see fruits next season or will it be ok over summer months just with a little growth? Sorry for all the questions just want to get the best start

I think the clay pot is too porous allowing the water to absorb into the pot and then drying out the mulch mix sooner?

Cool thanks for that. I'll transfer it over anyway, it should be okay. I'll throw some fresh cardboard spawn in just in case.

Do you not see the clay bonsai pot full of azurescens in my sig? Do a little research before giving advice that isn't actually advice!! Clay pots are awesome and will get colonized by mycelium.
