Gymnopilus luteus found in Wisconsin (with trip report) 1

What a magical Summer Solstice I had! The weather has been perfect having rained for the last five days, so I went to the wetland preserve near my house in search of fungi. I was not disappointed when I got there and started finding one incredible species after another! All of my G. luteus finds were growing on maple that was extremely wet, half of them were on logs that were submerged in standing water. All of the four larger specimens I found (3.5 to 4 inches across the cap) were visibly super saturated with moisture, on the verge of soggy. I think this is why they were so orange, with the best one looking neon electric orange, I don't think the photo does it justice. I did not find any huge flushes like what seems common, but rather, singly or just a few on each log I found. I came away with four larger mushrooms and enough pins and buttons to be considered equal to a fifth. I only saw any greening on the very smallest pin that I picked (no photo). I included a few other photos to show someof my other finds of the day, but the very last one I included as a possible look alike, a Pholiota granulosa, one of which I actually picked thinking I had found another small G. luteus. Watch out for those noobs! I'm including a trip report because it doesn't seem like anyone ever describes what these are like, which I found to be very different from a standard cubensis trip.
Preparation: I did not know what amount I had, but guesstimating from the times I had tripped on fresh cubensis, I would say that it probably would dry out to about five or six grams. I was worried it might not be enough so I decided to eat the pins and buttons fresh and make a tea from the larger ones. To make the tea I dropped them in the blender with a cup of water, then simmered it for 15 minutes on medium heat. I allowed it to cool and then strained it through a t-shirt, yeilding a dark cinnamon orange tea.
As a side note, I have been taking B vitamins and gingko biloba supplements as well as vitamin c. Instead of trying to acid tek, I just took a vitamin c as I started to ingest this stuff.
The taste was bitter, but I didn't find it to be as horrible as they make it out to be. Seriously, mexican dream herb tea is five times worse than this. I didn't add anything to the tea to change the taste and I didn't have a hard time drinking it at all. I chewed up the buttons and washed them down with the tea. The bitterness did have a cumulative effect, and by the time I finished the tea (took about ten minutes) I was glad there wasn't any more. After 15 minutes I have having some very slight alerts on the order of "maybe I'm still just a little high from earlier." It was about 40 minutes in that it began in a very pronouced way. A sudden wave of sedation washed over me, making my limbs feel heavy with a tiredness in my joints, almost an uncomfortable type of sedation. This felt akin to a "carrier wave" because it was accompanied by an electric feeling vibration going through my energy, colors intensified. It continued building, and as it did, I began having some mild queasiness, not even close to purging, but in this state, it does create an almost hectic feeling. The trip feels more phenethylamine like than other psilocybes. It came in very distinct waves, easily perceived, which would build up, and then after several minutes reaching a point of near discomfort, would begin to subside, and the trip would open into a deeper visual space. The waves are like an energetic tension that builds slowly and then releases. The headspace was very clear compared with cubensis and is a different feeling altogether. It's still a very bemushroomed feeling experience, funky, lit, inebriated, and trippin real weird. It was sort of like a sedated version of 2c-b. Color and beauty enhancement, not really visions or craziness, but more of a vibration, with peripheral motions and other distortions. I dropped at 11 pm and at just after one I could feel the peak ebbing slowly back down. I did experience the laughter Gyms are known for, which felt hearty and good, but also with a strange tone of madness. I could feel the mushroom laughing through me, and I could hear the collective laughter of all those trippers who came before me. Whoever called these trips mild was ill informed, it's a different animal with less chaos and confusion than other tryptamines, but I would definitely not call it mild at all. It felt immersive and did have several moments of edgy tension, yet relaxed and lethargic at the same time. I would say it was about six hours solid, but I enjoyed an off baseline feeling for a good two hours after that. Probably my favorite part of the trip was looking at all my photos for the day and being floored by the beauty of the fungal kingdom as well as a feeling of being closer to it. Thanks for reading!

Thanks for posting this! Awesome finds, and a great report. I've always wanted to go look for gyms, just have never gotten out. I'm normally so worn out from ovoid season, that I dont want to battle the heat, humidity, bugs, poison crap, etc.. any longer. Glad you had a rad time! I think you have inspired me to look this summer a bit.

"get up on this Wisconsin death trip"!
Your trip report is well written, I can feel what you're describing. Gyms have always been too bitter and funky for me to trip on.

May you be well.
May you be peaceful and at ease.

G luteus is clearly more potent then our west coast luteofolius or whatever were going to call them.

Word! Thanks man! They're definitely worth trying, I love them. I'm sure you could find em too, I've seen a lot of finds coming from Ohio. Super jealous of the ovoids, I can't figure out why we don't have those here.

G. luteofolius is the mushroom that I desire to find the most! I'm hoping to find some torwards the fall, I have a spot that I think will be a good bet. I'm really curious about what difference, if any, that it might have with the other gyms. I think eating those buttons fresh helped keep the potency up a little bit, but also probably caused the stomach discomfort. Get back out there and get you some!!!

I think the active (green staining) Gymnopilus that we find here on the west coast are most likely Gymnopilus aeruginosus

I will leave that up to guys like Alan and Joust to figure that shit out. I think there is few different species that get called the same thing . Stoked to find out one day what they are though.

Word brother! Haha, remember my post from last year with the Pholiota alnicolas I picked thinking they were G. luteus? I remember you commented in the thread. Well, this goes to show that persistence pays off! I've studied excessively for an entire year and when I found these babies I knew exactly what they were.

nice work mate
gymnopilus found YOU didn't they
gyms have other psychedelic compounds still not named in science I think the bitter taste and distinct smells constitute theory that they are in fact natures chemical factories
gyms have a more calming type of bioassay and its really due to the other compounds being more abundant than plain psilocybin or psilocin
gyms often bruise magenta, purples, brown, black, green, blue, a rainbow of colors
they are something really cool and special

Hi. So I'm new around here but I seem to have come across this particular fungi you are talking about. I'm new to this period. But, I did my research. Spore print came out rusty orange. They grow like crazy every yr on the roof of an old chckn coop for the past three yrs we've been here. The shingles are wooden. Hubby suspects cedar. This is first yr I decided to pick some and see. I sorta let about a qtrs worth sit in some boiling water in tea. Trip was VERY diff. Looking forward to next yr.

I am curious as to why you took the vitamins. Does this help to absord or dispel other toxins we dont want?
