You can actually do another dunk for the cakes, I'd say a 12 hr dunk, and it's up to you if you roll them in verm again, I think it slows it down the process of using that verm layer so I just place them back in my box after the dunk
I wouldn't cut the cake up after the 1st flush either. Wait until they are depleted then you can make an outdoor bed and get a couple extra fruits

Is it essential to keep the water around 4C when dunking (I saw this in a TEK here)? Or is this just the ideal temp? Just this is going to be impossible for me to do since I live in a shared house and cannot put it in the fridge to keep it this cool...Needs to be discreet.

There is no need to cold shock cubes, just use cold tap water and it will be fine.

Not necessary to keep the water cold. Just submerge them in water

Well, I just wanted to share with you an update, well into the second flush now. As you can see from the pics below the mushrooms are bigger and their shape is so much better after taking your advice. :-) So thank you very much for your help! I have been reading lots of books on mushrooms (all recommended here) so feel i've learnt a lot the past couple of weeks, and now have a better understanding of how it all works. I will definitely be growing more in the future. I am kind of hooked on Mycology now lol I find it fascinating.

Stems look so much more healthier, and the yield is pretty good. I now realise how important it is to get the 12 hours sunlight 12 hours dark balance right, and a decent airflow. You can see the improvement in the pics.
How many flushes can you do, or is it all relative? They don't seem to be letting up, everytime I pick, new pins form quickly when I add a little more water to the vermiculite.
Many thanks for your help again.
