First try with millet. Not sure it's correct.
    #20158554 - 06/20/14 09:11 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

My previous grow was with BRF cakes and got a flush before they seemed to stall out so I chucked em. I was satisfied with successfully growing my own cubes.

Now I am kicking it up and starting into the grain territory and picked up some Millet at a local healthfood store.

I simmered the millet for a bit and then started noticing kernels bursting so I removed from the heat and let it soak a bit more while I prepared paper towels to lay it down on to dry out a bit. Pressure cooked the jar for 90min ~10-15 pressure but couldn't get it stable with my shitty stovetop.

This is my first try so I can understand mucking it up and having to redo it. I already inoculated with my spore syringe so I guess all I can do it wait now.

Now here is my question - is the millet too dry? It certainly looks dry to me and there is barely any noticeable condensation inside the jar. Will the burst kernels make for shitty spawn?

Any insight?

In the mean time I might order some sclerotia forming spores and give millet another go with just soaking for 24 hours.

There will only be condensation if there is a temperature differential.

The grains should look completely dry on the outside....the inside of the grain is what matters.

All you can do is wait and see.

hey there, that looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
I was actually looking at millet yesterday (at the health food store) and noticed that it had been processed in such a way that it wasn't usable for our needs here, I'm concerned that's what you've got on your hands (hulled or something like that, can't remember)

you say it looks to dry, but to me it looks like a mushy mess, but that may just be
all the burst grains.

my best guess: that's gonna either contam quickly(either in the jar or once it's spawned), take forever to colonize, or will be barely shake-able;

edit:
here's a pic of a millet jar for reference:

Yea it must be hulled millet and that's why it burst so much. Darn.

I guess I wasted a spore syringe and money on the millet.

Do you think I should just wait and see what happens or just start on a new project?

That looks like cooked rice/risi or something.

It looks no bueno to me.

I've never used millet though.

I'd scrap it, or at least put it to the side and start something else because I highly doubt that will colonize well.

You didn't use a whole syringe on one jar did you? A quarter of a cc would have been more than enough. Also that jar is fucked, start over.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I wasn't informed enough about hulled vs whole millet since the information seems to be omitted everywhere I look :frown:

No I used about 3ml total for that jar. I am just assuming the syringe is going to be contaminated from being used partially. Am I wrong in thinking that?

Yes you are wrong thinking that.

Most people use less than 1cc per jar.

That's the best part, you are dealing with grains, so it will be easy to do.  Get a grain and follow a proper tek to make sure you have it the right moisture content.  Once you get at least one jar fully colonized, you will be able to use that jar to transfer to up to ten new jars, this successfully expanding the little amount of spores you have left.

Unfortunately I can't get a flow hood to do g2g so that's not an option for me. I'm basically stuck with MS syringes. I don't even feel comfortable with the prints I took from my BRF grow to use them in syringes. I didn't prep it correctly and kinda just put caps on pieces of tinfoil inside a box. Most certainly are contaminated.

I don't have a flow hood, but I have done several hundred G2G transfers successfully.....

Build a SAB (Still Air Box) and get your grain on lol.

You can do everything you need to do in a 'still air box'.

Cheap too.

... can't type as fast as PF.

I nocc'ed up 3 grain jars a week ago with the first syringe I ever made from the first print I ever took from the first grow I ever did. all 3 jars have growth, no contams. I was stressin over whether or not my syringes would be good. so you'll never know till you try them. also, I made my prints by just placing a cap on a piece of foil with a glass over top for 24hrs. then I removed the cap, let the print dry, and later made the syringe. this was all done inside a still air box.

It's happening! Looks okay to me since I see rhizomorphic growth.
Am I wrong?

It doesn't look too bad. You should try and shake it. Would finish fast.
