Tripping alone...in Big Bend National Park?
    #20152064 - 06/18/14 09:23 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Big Bend is about a 10 hour drive from me. And I've never camped alone. I've done enough camping (with people) to know what I'm doing out there, but is this too ambitious to do solo? No way could my lady handle tripping out there, and my friends either bitch and complain too much while camping or would just be simply too mortified to trip out there in that remote of a region. So I'd rather do it alone if possible.

What do y'all think? Could I do this solo and still have a good time? On the surface it seems like it would be magical but tripping face out there at night solo (especially for a first solo camp) could be a bit daunting.

I LOVE BIG BEND! It's a beautiful place! I go out there with my family every two years for a big camping trip. It would be a fantastic place for a psychedelic journey. I would definitely suggest tripping durning the daytime vs the night. As long as you are well prepared everything should go great.
Take the window hike while tripping, it's absolutely breath taking (:

Would it be too hot to go during the summer? Should I wait until fall?

In the actual park it's not too too bad. It's usually like 20 degrees cooler in the basin than the area surrounding big bend.  It will still probably be in the upper 90's this time of year. The fall would be perfect though.

I've been wanting to go so bad. I went to Yellowstone & Grand Teton NP when I was working in WY, and it was just epic. Then when I got back home to TX, I realized that one of the nation's most remote parks is just a day drive away.

Big Bend is MAGIC.  I spent 4 weeks canoing the Rio in and around Big Bend, and it's by far the most mystical and beautiful place I've ever been.  Every night we heard voices/flute music out there (each of us in the group I was in) and none of us were even tripping.  I feel like that area has SUCH an energy to it because of all of the ancient cultures of that area, and it seems to me that the land is THE PLACE to trip.  Period.  That's the area where all the cultures used peyote for centuries, and the when you go out there even sober, it's impossible for that land to not to open itself up to you and teach you all kinds of stuff.  Incredible place.  There's some ancient spirits out there, no doubt in my mind.

IMO, you there's no possible way to have a more spiritual experience than tripping in the wilderness alone.  No way, teaches you all you'll ever need to know.

Just make sure someone knows where you'll be and when you'll be back just incase.  Id mind fuckery myself too much on shrooms to be alone but peyote would be fantastic.  Id want someone with me just for occupying my time etc.  I've already been sent on my vision quest, Im allowed company now

Not to be a buzzkill, but if you've never camped solo, then I cannot recommend you camp out in Big Bend let alone trip out there solo.

It's one of the most remote places in the entire state and there is no cell service in nearly all of the park. Throw in the unknowns that remote backcountry wilderness comes with and you have a recipe for disaster. If you get in trouble without a partner, the chance of serious injury/death is high especially if you are tripping in a non-frequented part of the park.

You could do it solo, and you could have a blast, but the risk is too great IMHO. You never know how things are going to turn even if you are an experienced tripper.

Consider tripping somewhere closer or waiting until you can find someone to go with. There are tons of great remote spots in Texas to get your feet wet before you decide to jump in the deep end.

Great stuff you guys. Thanks for the feedback. Yeah maybe I better go do some solo trials closer to home before heading off into a place that remote.
