My friend is a little confused, he is trying to mix up a batch of the Malt Extract Yeast Agar as described in GGMM, by Stamets, and he seems to have all the necessary ingredients but was curious if the "Extra" Light Malt Extract he aquired was the same thing as the "Barley Malt Sugar" ingredient required in the mixture. Maby he is way off, if so then why is it called "Malt Extract" Agar? Thanks Here is a pic of what he has.

I would think so...I have been making and using home-made Malt Extract Agar off and on for over twenty years, using any available light tan malt extract I could find. Basic MEA recipe is usually 20 grams agar, 20 grams light tan malt extract and water to make one liter of solution. I usually add nutritive yeast extract, and depending on what species I am working with, I may add calcium carbonate and potassium phosphate (dibasic). Always worked very well, never had a moment's problem with using light malt extract....
