MS Coir Monotub 5qt WBS Spawn PICS! 1

Hey guys I spawned 5qts of WBS to coco coir and 2qts vermiculite on the 3rd of this month. It seemed to have totally colonized within 6 days so I took off the tape and black towel I had laying over it and put it into fruiting conditions on the 9th. Just yesterday however, I decided to case it with straight plain vermiculite. Once the vermiculite was laid I misted it until it was moist. Here are some pictures I took of it last night. Let me know what you guys think.
You can begin to see the mycelium bursting through the vermiculite layer. I'm not going to be doing any patching of any kind. If you guys have any suggestions please do bring them on, I am not afraid of constructive criticism it's what makes me better at what I do

Oh and btw it's a 55qt Sterilite tub, I used a black trashbag to layer the bottom then used duct tape to tape up the sides so no condensation would leak in between the tub and trash bag layer. The substrate is approx. 4in. in depth.

you actually want to pull the liner off the wall and flap it in toward your substrate so the condensation does drip into the bottem of your tub and not into the bottem of your substrate where it will cause contam or other problems. I was having to dump this excess water once the sub was colonized by holding the sub down and tilting the tub nearly upside down until all the water drained out. Now i have holes in the bottem of my tubs so the excess water will just slowly dribble out and if needed i can just barely ti the tub and collect the water as it drains out the hole. thanks to cronicr for helping me out with this one i was thinking of mentioning it to frank to put that tip in his teks next time i see him around

Definitly want that liner to shrink with your sub. That prevents the micro climates that cause side pinning.
and if that verm layer is suppose to be a casing, i would patch when you fruit it. when casing, i havnt done it, your suppose to fruit around 20-30% of the casing colonized. Dont qoute me on that, utse.

yeah that verm layer is only going to confuse the sub and give you an uneven pinset. you could have cased with the same substrate you used (80/20 coir verm) instead, and you should have kept it colonizing until the casing was 20-30% then patched(optional) and fruited.check franks links http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17897163#17897163 and search for his logs they are very detailed and picture oriented.

Okay well I patched with more vermiculite and loosened the polyfil in the top hole by quite a bit. I re-misted to moisten the vermiculite. We shall see how it turns out. Any other suggestions? I'll post up some new pictures shortly.

Here are a couple pictures of the tub after I patched it and re-misted. Now in 100% fruiting conditions. This is using Damion's Coir tek. I will repost when i've got pins. I don't have any condensation in my tubs either which I've never had before but the entire substrate colonized very rapidly. Remember this is 100% fully colonized coco coir/vermiculite substrate with a straight vermiculite casing. More updates to come. -Mushaboom

idk if it's too late but you should pull that liner off the sides and in toward your substrate or you will be left with mostly side pins and a water logged sub

indeed, condensation will drip down and create gaps between the liner and the sub

Actually I have almost no condensation whatsoever (What you see in the pics is actually mist from me spraying the tubs after laying and patching the vermiculite. I have great fae and the substrate is to nowhere be seen separating from the trash bag liner. I just mist and fan once a day.

that is not how a mono is designed to work but it will. You should work on getting your substrate to the right water content and dial in how loose you need the polyfill by the amount of evaporation below the holes and the amount of condensation on the walls. You want that humidity for fruit growth and if it's drying up every day it's not humid enough. yes you may get a good pinset from this but the fruits will not be optimal in these conditions.... Fae is not forced it is passive. that along with humidity and your set. no fanning or misting needed

Humidity stays around a steady 100% in the tub. I no longer get condensation and I never had condensation even during colonization with all holes taped up completely. This is definitely not my first monotub lol. I've done easily over 50. This is my first go with using Vermiculite as a straight casing layer rather than anything else such as 50/50+ or no casing at all etc.

hmm... maybe is it because the outside of your chamber is warmer than mine? or your substrate is dryer?

I'm not sure but I always have very quick colonization. I use Damion's Coir Tek. 1 brick coco coir, 2 qts vermiculite to 17 cups of boiling water in a bucket. Mix the contents well within 30 minutes of dumping the water into the bucket. Then once cooled down I put all of my substrate into the tub then thoroughly mix my 5qts of spawn in with it. It has even begun to separate from the trash liner and I removed the tape holding the liner to the inside of the tub, so the liner is now free to pull away from the wall of the tub when the subtrate shrinks. I patched again and after one night already shows another 20-30% colonization of the vermiculite. I'm just going to let it do it's thing from here. I'll update with pics of pins when that time arrives.

I finally have a pin, it's just one. A lot of the mycelium has come through and colonized the vermiculite.. Should I patch and mist again until it's all covered? Or should I just let it do it's thing now?

Okay this is my first time with straight vermiculite. It's grown through more and I also have a lot more pins. Should I continue to patch the mycelium that has grown completely through the vermiculite or leave as is and let fruit. The amount of pins popping up every few hours is exponential but only seem to be coming out of the vermiculite with no mycelium visible. This is only for the most part. I'll post up some more pics here in a bit. I'm about to drink some mushroom tea with my girl, it's her first time....

I've got a very even pinset which is something I was not expecting. I probably have easily 100+ pins on this thing spread evenly throughout the entire tub. So far casing with straight vermiculite has been a lot better for me than I was expecting. I will post up some more pictures later.
Here is one from not too long ago, you cannot see the pin set from this far out and from this angle very well so I'll get a picture which shows the pin set in its uniformity. Thanks guys for your help. I will continue to update with pictures throughout this Mono grow.

Wow. Never put two and two two together that it was the drips causing gaps in the liner.
Any tips to keep the liner against the sub ?

Okay, so here is a small update, there are an amazing amount of pins on this flush. I'm very excited and should have a full canopy. Conditions are looking really good. Here you go, I'll post up more, one every day. If you have any questions about how I do everything feel free to ask and I can take you through it step by step.

I'm going to be doing another tub here and It looks like I'll probably be casing that with vermiculite as well

Here is an update guys some new pics from just now! This is going to be a good flush! Oh, since this is me getting back into the groove of things and I have another tub I will be doing soon that I will make a grow log of, I have decided to go ahead and make a contest and have a little fun. Whoever can guess the closest to the amount I will yield dry will receive a few of my best prints off of this Flush (B+). I'll keep you guys updated and thanks guys for the comments, I've been out of the game for a while but I'm back. I also moved into a place with no damn stove so I need someone to point me in the right direction of a hotplate that can actually get my 23qt chinese pos pressure cooker to 15 p.s.i. lol. At least until I can buy an electric All American... Some pics from today for your entertainment... You only get one guess so you may want to wait until It's closer to harvest day..

Feel free to ask any questions and I will answer to the best of my ability. I try to K.I.S.S., yeah I'm one of those guys just thought I would contribute to the community somehow so a nice little contest I thought ought to be fun. One Love Guys and thank you all for your support! - Mushaboom

Thanks Faht! You've been an inspiration to me in my work, I've been watching your threads for some time now and I must say I am very impressed with your work Thanks for the props on the cake tub as well! I have one of those going right now too along with this Monotub and another mono I'm about to do. I think I may just do a step by step grow log so everyone can see how I do things. Pic of the tub>

DroolingRock: It's going to be whoever is just plain closest
I'll keep you guys updated with more pics as the day grows long.

Thanks guys, more updates to come soon!

Nice! I'm glad I could inspire you! I love seeing fruiting chambers for cakes that are appropriately sized for them. They create micro-climates for each other.. no reason to stress the cakes out by increasing their environment. Keep on keepin' on.

Thanks man, I've been growing for years and have learned to tweak my own way for best results and what works for me. I like to keep it simple. Oh I did pick one large mushroom and it weighed 46g. Some pics from just now>

Update:

Should I start harvesting some of the older mushrooms or just wait for the others to mature?? I'm going for the most weight here.

I always try and harvest right after the veil tears or even a little before if I'm going to be away from the house for a few hours. Though my main objective is always potency, I create more weight by doing more tubs. I try and never let them over mature but that's just me.

Unfortunately I was undecided and left the house only to come back to an over matured tub. I will definitely get some weight off of this but will now have to wash off the caps with cotton balls to give them that "golden cap" that everyone seems to always want to see. These are my harvest pics and I will have some wet weight info here shortly>

So I harvested and there was so much I didn't even bother to weigh it out while wet and fresh! But it's definitely gotta be a record for me, I will continue to use a vermiculite casing layer on all of my tubs. So I did tear up the substrate a little bit at first when I couldn't find scissors and was too much in a hurry to start my harvest which you will see in the left side of the tub in the picture below. I used the twist and pull method and that f'd up my substrate then I found the scissors and all was well. After fully harvesting I saturated the substrate then added a new thin layer of vermiculite and then saturated that. So we shall see what the second flush has in store for me. Here are some pics for your enjoyment.

Alright so as an update, I'm still waiting for them to dry out, i'm just using a large box fan aimed at the 3 boxes full of mushies you can see above in one of my last posts. I should have a complete dry weight sometime tomorrow evening or the day after tomorrow. I may even look into buying a dehydrator if I can find a cheap one... maybe someone can point me in the right direction while I begin my search! Meanwhile I have a cake tub that seems to be doing very well I'll post up some pics of that here in a little bit.
Here is my current cake tub on it's first flush>
And here is one of my small cake tubs going on it's 6th flush!!! Still no contams!!>
I have some great B+ genetics going on here! Remember whoever got closest to the dry weight gets a print and something else special that will carry on the great genetics of this batch! Slant wink wink.

I'd say you got at least 6 oz there. Just got 4.5 oz off my 55 qt and my canopy wasn't nearly as impressive as yours. Definitely sucks when you wait too long to harvest, I hate having to clean the spores off the caps.

Thanks guys! I went out grocery shopping and picked up a "Presto Dehydro Model 06300" because the fan I was using to dry the mushrooms fell over and one of the fan blades broke, turns out I left the thing in the bottom of the cart (It was around $50) and when I checked out I completely forgot about it and so did the cashier and I didn't even realize it until I got to the car so I got a free dehydrator bahahah!! I packed it full and could only get half of my flush in there even with it almost fully dried. Here is a pic of my cake tub until the results are in with final weight
Let me know what you guys think >

Okay, the results are pretty much in because no one but Faht got close and he was still off by a couple of oz's. I'm not finished dehydrating them but I have a total of 8oz cracker dry bagged so far. I'm looking at maybe one or two more oz's. Amazing and definitely a new record for me!! (this is not including the cake tub!) Faht, you win so if you want you can PM me with your details and I'll be sending you some of these genetics I'll do another contest with the cake tub, faht excluded since he already won the first round with the monotub!! I will update again later.

Lol, if you would actually read through the thread this is just from one 5qt wbs spawn to coco coir monotub!!! Not from pf-cakes lol. I haven't weighed out or harvested my cake tub yet lol. Read this thread from the beginning for more understanding ;P Jesus if I could yield that much from just cakes I never would have tried a monotub in the first place long ago. lol.

IT's all about finding a tub that cozily fits the amount of cakes you have. Just like Fahtster said it's all about creating mini micro-climates between the cakes. As long as you dunk for 24 hours then roll and mist and fan occasionally then you are set as long as the tub cozily fits the cakes! K.I.S.S.

Thanks guys!! I'll update with the second flush and I'm about to spawn another monotub but this time with only 4qts wbs instead of 5. I'll probably let it colonize for 10-15 days instead of just 6 this time and use the same type of tub and obviously use Vermiculite again as a casing layer. I appreciate all of the comments and support. I want to try growing some Penis Envy so that may be coming soon too. So if anybody wants to trade please PM me! One Love! Peace, Love and Unity to all!
