what IS "straw"?

can i use timothy or alphalpha(sp?) for "straw"?
those are easy to find. straw is not.

no the straw you are looking for is the hollow stalks that is left over from a farmer after his harvest...its just plant stalk with none of the seeds or grains left on it...its used as animal bedding mostly, go to a farm supply store, or a farm even. Timothy hay and alphalpha are not what you are looking for...oat straw, barley straw wheat straw...all kinds, the more golden color it is the better it works seems to be the rule of thumb.

I know you can't use straight alfalfa because the high amounts of nitrogen invite contams. I think you can supplement with alfalfa. Don't know about the timothy hay, but I suspect it wouldn't work that well.
