Omphalotus olearius? (PICS)
    #2011759 - 10/15/03 05:32 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I found a hell of a lot of what I think to be Omphalotus olearius. They were growing from an oak stump, in clusters. I'll let you see my pictures for the rest of the description. I'm still waiting on a spore print, just picked them.

One thing that's noteable about the mushroom I found is that when I get the mycelial "juices" on my skin, it burns like hell.

Here's lots of pics:

Great photos!

Those sure look like Omphalotus to me.

Try seeing if they glow in the dark tonight. That's an unusual enough feature that it should absolutely nail down the ID.

I've never heard of the juice causing a burning sensation on skin. Not just from these, from any mushroom. I wonder if you're especially sensitive to a toxin in them (or maybe you're just a sensitive guy).

Happy mushrooming!

The girl that I was with got some on her skin and it burned the hell out of her as well. Weirdness. I checked the one that I'm printing to see if it glows and it doesn't :\ I wanted some glowing mushrooms :frown:

I guess they don't always glow. Also, the glow can be really faint. You might need to go into a dark room in your house and let your eyes adapt to teh dark for 10 minutes before you can see it at all.

I may ask a toxicology person I know about skin reactions to mushroom juice. I haven't heard of anybody gettnig a burning sensation from it before.

Happy mushrooming!

The burning... It was compariable to getting a harsh acid on your skin. I've spilled HCL on my skin before and the burning sensation was similar.... Just burned like hell. I'll give you more details tomorrow when the absinthe is out of my system

Heh... no blacklight in my room, but I might go hit up someone's room upstairs who replaced all their flouros with black lights. If it's anything special I'll get pics.

Hmm, there are some rusilla mushrooms out here that can burn your mouth something fierce - something like hot peppers only worse (have not tried them, just heard about them). If the substance in these is something like capsacin in peppers then It should not be too much of a streatch to believe it could irritate skin too.
Now that does not look like any rusi I've spotted locally, but if it has a skin irritant in it I wonder if there isn't some similarity.

There are many Russulas that are *very* hot. In some areas of eastern Europe and Scandinavia they're even used as pepper substitutes. But they don't cause a burning sensation in the skin (I've sampled a lot of them in the field as part of the identification process).

I also contacted some experts on the topic and none of them have heard of mushroom juice causing a burning sensation on skin. I have books dedicated to mushroom toxicology and there are no references to it in them either.

This is honestly something unusual. I've never heard of it happening in over 25 years of mushroom hunting.

I did come up with some comments about skin rashes being caused by handling mushrooms. But the descriptions were all consistent with ordinary contact dermatitis or allergic reactions. Incidentally, stinkhorns (Phallus sp.) were one of the main culprits.

Happy mushrooming!
