Fruiting outdoors? Can it be done?
    #2011585 - 10/15/03 04:41 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

My friend has 4 rye mycobags that are colonized but he doesn't want to fruit them in his house at the moment. I'm thinking, since here in the Eastern US shrooms are popping up like crazy everywhere, can he fruit them outside? He has the perfect little plot of land for it and everything.

So, can it be done? If so, can someone give me some info about doing it? I'm sure my friend would be greatly appreciative

Thanks. I read the faq about 3 min after I posted this.

I do have another question though. It says in the faq that it will take 3 weeks to start showing a flush. Is it too late in the season for this? I'm in the mid atlantic and right now it's averaging about 50F night and 75F day.

Your chances are getting worse and worse evry day. You might be able to make it happen if you can some how make a greenhouse effect for them.

it is a cheap possible solution to your weather woes.

Sweet deal man. Is there any way I can make a greenhouse on my own though?

If so then we are going to be getting these shroomies out there within 3 days.

Sure you can make one. Use some wooden stakes to frame out the area you want to cover and use some type of heavy plastic sheeting (translucient or clear) to cover. Make sure that no holes allow coolair to blow in and you have a greenhouse.

Remember though, that I said you might be able to pull it off. I don't give any guarantees. I'm in the southeast pretty close to Florida and I'm not sure as to how much longer I can keep getting them to come up. I'll probably do alright as long as the winter is mild.

Ok, sounds good. I think as long as we can get 1-2 flushes we will be extremely happy.

Another question. At what temp will they stop producing?

I don't really care about a high yeild here, we just want something to displace the cost of these mycobags.

Around here shrooms go for $35 an eighth so it would be great to be realtively self sufficient untill we can get an indoor grow back together again.

Your yeilds aren't going to be that great from my experiences and I would suspect yeilds to decrease as the temps decrease from the optimum fruiting temps.
