Freeze drying mushrooms * 1
    #20111202 - 06/10/14 06:59 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

I decided to put together a very simple freeze dryer for drying my mushrooms and retaining the look of them when fresh. The process takes a few days but there is nothing better than a freeze dried shroom. Here is some pictures of the freeze dryer and stuff. If anyone has any suggestions of ways I could in prove this system please leave feed back.

Freeze drying takes advantage of sublimation(Ice to vapor without going through liquid phase). After freezing the mushrooms you put them in a vacuum chamber and pull a vacuum as close as you can to absolute vacuum. Looking at the phase chart you can see that in a high vacuum water can not exist in liquid form. This means the water in the mushrooms can't melt and destroy their cell structure. The mushrooms dry without melting first. It's how they make astronaut ice cream. The cooler with the pipes sticking out is a cold trap, it condenses the vapor into ice again I'm using dry ice and isopropyl alcohol to reach -70 needed. I also have to you a desiccant to help absorb the vapor, I'm using DampRid in this case but I will soon be purchasing silica beads to use instead.

Have you tried it out yet OP?

Be prepared for higher potency as psilocin won't be degraded as with conventional dehydration methods.

I would suggest dry ice and acetone, I works better imo.

I really can't wait until freeze drying becomes standard practice.

Good job on the build brother, I look forward to more of your posts

As Willsolvem said, there's multiple studies that suggest if kept well freeze drying will keep the psilocin intact.
If my hypothesis of many 'bunk' shrooms just not converting much to psilocybin, is right, there should almost never be inactive shrooms this way.
(and an added kick for those that are active).

Make sure to freeze the shrooms as quickly as possible... otherwise they will disintegrate.

UPDATE: 6/22/14

I have been refining my set up and have had many fails and some wins. I decided I will not try the shrooms until I get this shit down. I've been pretty busy for the past few weeks working on a solar project so it's been slow. I've found that things like ice cream and bananas are extremely hard to do. I can do apples and meats kind of. The apples come out a little wrinkly, I don't have any picture fails because I didn't think of it at the time, but I will. I've also replaced the hose going between the cold trap and the chamber with a larger one. It's moving along, but just not at the speed I would like it to be. Shit I'm glad schools out or this would have never went down at all.

You should check out this video, it's his second attempt at freeze drying based on similar fails you've had.

Yeah his first video is what I based my design off. I built it before I watched this one. I'm definitely going to use the bowl design when I make my next cold trap. I have a little altered design in mind using 2 metal pipes inside each other, one is 10" OD an the other one is 8" OD. I might just throw this one out and make that one, we'll see.

Yea the cold trap line should be 3 inches in diameter as the vapor will freeze to the walls of the line eventually restricting flow completely. A tip, look into exhaust piping for your condenser/freezing side
