I was wondering if the "dark" cycle is supposed to be totally dark, as with cultivating some plants, or if it really matters. Does anyone take steps to ensure that their babies only recieve light during the light cycle? Darkening out the terrarium totally in teh dark cycle?

Also, what light cycles are most effective for pinhead initiation?

It doesn't have to be totally dark for P. cubensis, but it helps to expose it to ligh only when fruiting it -- this negated the possibility of early pinhead formation and will get it to fruit more evenly (bigger flushes.) For mushrooms like Agaricus bisporus it's neccesary to keep them in the dark (but they fruit in the dark, too.)

According to Stamets, the best light/dark cycle is 12 hrs on/ 12 hrs off, but I really don't think it matters that much. As long as cubies get some light to tell them to fruit you're set.
