Hey All, Been away a LONG while, This is actually kinda old news, but Here goes. These researchers at Stanford University have created this amazing piece of tech and are giving away 10,000 of them. Sadly the signups are over (got my application in) and we are waiting to see if i was selected. This brought tears to my eyes when i first saw it, imagine the lives that will be saved, I believe these MOFO's are gonna get a NOBEL for this.

Wow. I want one. That's brilliant.

I signed up for the beta test a few months ago, I am definitely hoping to be selected. It could be incredibly useful I think out in the field.

I did as well, and mentioned the field aspect in my submission letter. Still waiting but have high hopes, as they will be offering 10,000 of them.

No one that has signed up has heard anything back yet. I think we need to show up at their office with pitch forks.

Am i the only one who thinks this is not really worth while? I mean.... using finger tension to focus? That sounds impractical. Only people with really good dexterity would be able to hold an image of a protozoa or spore or anything smaller in focus. I just don't see how this is practical , seeing as how you need to "project" through the image to enlarge it. I would rather have a decent 300 $ microscope with digital camera attachment...

Free paper microscope. If it works cool, if not, bummer. I cant afford a nice one so if this even has any decent resolution to it fiddling with it a bit seems worth it to me. It has potential applications in the field, where you cant really carry a full microscope, at least not practically.

If you want to carry a 300$ microscope out on a hunting trip, go right ahead. I'm not waiting for you to catch up.....

It is possible that a 20x objective connected to a 10x eyepiece could be rigged into a useful microscope for the field that uses sunlight.
I am interested to see if this is practical or not. Even if it is practical it probably makes more sense to use the daylight hours to hunt mushrooms and do the scope work in the evenings.

I think the price, size and weight is whats going to make it practical.
