Grrrr.... ants...
    #2008196 - 10/14/03 01:55 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Well, this is a new one for me and I haven't heard of anybody else posting about them before, so here goes... Afoaf's terrerium got infected with ants this weekend. Those bastards can carry off a lot of 'cake' in just a little bit of time... it also seems that once they aquire a taste for mushroom mycelium they like it and come searching for more, in hordes. My friends solution was to place the terrerium inside a small tub filled with an inch or two of water. Now the ants stand on the far shore with fond memories of trippy days, but no boats to get across.

This sounds like a great fix. I too have had ants, which ruined quite a bit of my work back in the day. I launched a chemical attack, which seems to have worked.

I suggest a spraying of 1.5% H2O2 to prevent germnation of any spores the ants may have tracked into your friends fruiting area, including the cakes.

Thanks for the input.  Done!   Preventive maint!

I didn't want to kill the poor fellows if I didn't have to.  They were just looking for a meal.

I had the same feelings at first. However, they just kept coming in all over my house.

I remember coming home and smelling something odd in my kitchen...an ant smell. I then found a trail that came out of the wall across my ceiling down into my pantry and back. Thousands of the buggers were there. I found it to be a necessity to prevent them from terrorising my projects and my kitchen.

After I sprayed the house at the problem areas, they seemed to stay outside. Then my landlord decides to place some poison outside near the foundation. This only caused them to come back into my house.

Through this experience I have learned a bit about ants. The poison I used did kill them on contact, but more importantly it created a barrier that others would not cross. I see an ant colony as a whole. What I did was no different than pruning a tree to prevent damage to a house.

I do share your sentiments regarding the unnecessary killing of life.

I may be following your methods yet. The moat was a great idea, but they seem to have built some kind of theme park around it. Either that or they think they can drink the thing dry. They like the water more than they like the mycelium. Grrr... damn ants. I added a bag of rock salt to my moat last night...lets see how they like salt water... results to follow.
