Cyan Habitat Questions
    #2005532 - 10/13/03 02:20 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys. Apparently its cyan season in the Seattle area. I'm new to this area, so I'm not familiar with the habitats for cyans. I've read that they grow well in places with alder woodchips and alder trees. I have access to an area that is chock full of alder trees.

What areas should I look for? Any tips or suggestions would be awesome!

Thanks guys, and happy mushroom hunting!

They do not grow around alder trees, but in alder woodchips, sawdust and/or bark mulch and/or pieces of braches of alder in assorciation with rhodderdendrons, man made gardens in office buildings new apartment complexes but not in the red shaggy mu7lch all over the city area.
Lack of rain has slowed the winter fruitings a little but they will spring uyp in abundance in some places and older places are always replaced with a different mu7lch so they can disaapear in two to three years in a given location. mj

yeh, it seems they're off to a slow start after that scorcher of a summer...

I had picked a few hundred by this time last season, so far this year I've maybe picked around 50 .  Hopefully things will pick up soon...

A search in this forum will give you lots of pics of the kind of habitat you're looking for...

Went out at lunch today to see if I could spot any.. came up negatory.

Then again, I was exploring some new Seattle territory, so perhaps last year's strongholds are off to a good start. I'll be stopping there soon...

It did seem a bit dry even after a weekend of rain.

Methinks its still too soon but who knows...

Chunder I had my first luck last season.... I hit paydirt primarily in chips, though I did find a few spots where cyans were growing in broken alder branches nicely aged.

There's simply no substitute for time, dedication and shoe leather!
