Outdoor Cube Grow...cuz my jars are suspect :) update 6-18 1

So some of you might have read that two of my tubs got trich.
Problem?? I didn't make transfers from my plates to make sure I had clean mycelium.
So I have 9 jars colonized that I'm not stupid enough to spawn indoors again even tho they LOOK fine.
So, this brings me to my outdoor grow log.
Now, I've never done this before, but I think it will work!
So I went and dug a hole under a big shady tree

The dimensions of this hole are 2ft x 4ft x 5.5inch deep.
Then I went and bought some Black Kow it was $5 for a 50# bag.

I also have some grass clippings that have been sitting in the sun for a week.

Next I went and watered the hole.

Then I lined it with cardboard. you can see there was still some standing water in the hole. the cardboard pretty much soaked it up.

Ugh... now the FUN part...
Took my wheel barrel and dumped my manure in it,

then added some grass clippings to fluff it up. i think that was enough.

This is what it looked like after mixed
Brought to field capacity. Then I broke up my spawn jars

And mixed them into my bulk substrate, in the hole. 9 quarts of suspect KSSS from MS
I put a layer of manure down first

Then added a jar

Mixed it up with my hands.

Then another layer of manure

Then added a jar Mixed it up with my hands. Etc etc until my wheelbarrel was empty

This is the finished product.

You can see i dug my hole a little deep but I don't think that is gonna matter in the end.

The substrate depth is just a little over 2.5"
So, that was me correcting my mistake
I think I'm gonna cover it with a tarp for a few weeks, then come back and see what happens.
Any thoughts? Should I water this bed first?

Wish I had a climate to do that, I just seperate my suspect jars and either spawn em to just a little sub to see what happens or toss depending on the situation and how much fruiting space I have at the time.
Can't wait to see your big plot in action

i hear ya brotha, ive been down that route, ive had much better results with field aged stuff that i collected myself. now if anything at all i just do verm/coir, gypsum, etc. but i usually dnt add much except one of those cardboard barriers cuz i want it to fruit right away and not try to colonize much. i used to do this with spent cakes quite often. ive found that bagged stuff lead to problems for me, so i nvr went back. good luck!! i luv outdoor grows!

Black Kow is fine, I've used it, though I seem to remember it being 1-1-1. If you don't like the extra hole space, try filling it in with field capacity straw/grass clippings/whatever. I don't think you want to use the tarp, but can't really say, you certainly don't need it.

i think black kow is just a brand name and different companys' do different things with it a sfor the tarp it is optional but will help tyo not have to water so often, i would put some weight on it though to help stop critters from fucking with ya

ya, i used grass clippings.
stamets talks about covering with plastic during colonization, so thats why i did it.
plus i dont want birds and shit coming down eating my spawnQuote:

should i throw a little bit of dirt on top of the tarp? does it need some weigh on the substrate?
i have bricks around the edges already

Birds can sense it too, somehow, I buried some suspect spawn one day and my chickens made a beeline straight for it and scratched all of it up. Sometimes them or squirrels will take a peck out them as well... hopefully they're having a good time from it.
