Are multivitamins a scam?

You can go to the store and look at the label on a bottle of Centrum for Men and read the amount of each vitamin it has in it, but if you were to go looking for a bottle of each particular vitamin on that list, the amount is sure to be a lot more than what was in the Centrum vitamin. I got some b1, b6, and b3 from GNC a few weeks ago. They were all about 100 mg or 300 mg and when I look at the Centrum, it's got like 25 mg or something... what is 25 mg of b6 going to do when I actually need 300 mg? My question is: Is there any point in taking a multivitamin when you're basically not even getting the recommended dosage? Is it a scam?
edit: just now looked at the bottle of Centrum for Men and it clearly states there is only 2 mg of B6 in each tablet and says that is 100% daily value, 6 mcg of B12 and says that is 100% daily value.

Pretty much so. You're much better off getting your vitamins from the food you eat.

Most multivitamins don't have the vitamin in bioavailable form anyways so you can't really get anything from them anyways.

I don't think multivitamins are a "scam"
They are meant to be used as a way to fill in the gaps for vitamins and minerals you may be missing from the daily foods you eat.
They are in no way meant to be used as the primary source for one's nutrition.
I think it may be fairly common for multivitamins to have low doses of vitamin B1,B2,B3
The multivitamin I take has more than 100% of the Daily Value of all vitamins except (B1,B2,B3)
This might be due to B1 being found in a lot of grains and B3 being found in a lot of meats. I suppose the makers of the multivitamin are expecting a person to eat enough grains and meat to cover their daily need for those particular vitamins

Might as well be buying rattlesnake oil. If you eat somewhat healthy you don't need them. Its not like people in the US have issues with scurvy or rickets anymore, unless you are a pirate you are pissing your money away. If you live on the sea for several months out of the year on a rowboat, by all means bring a bottle of multivitamins.
