Zen Koan of the day
    #2005723 - 10/13/03 05:33 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

What is the sound of one hand smashing you repeatedly up-side the head?

It could sound just about anything, so there is no answer.

There must be sound because the smashing of the head causes vibrations in the air which is sound.

The question should be if in the vacume of space you are pounding G Bush with a big rock when he squeal like a pig can it be heard if no one is there.

Contrary to popular belief:

1) space is not a vacuum, it is a partial vacuum
2) sound can travel through a partial vacuum, just not very well

Well, if you are pounding George Bush repeatedly in the head with a vacuum, will Herbert Hoover come out of the vacuum like a genie and congratulate George Bush for a job well done as President?
Peace.

Hint: Continue Maia's initial thought, but reject the second.

I admit that, at first, I started this threat somewhat jokingly, until I realized it's 'zen' answer, and ironically now I find this to be one of the most useful koans to understand. I really want to give more hints, but you can learn more from solving problems with the least assistance.

Hmm.. I'd have to say it is the sound of a hand smashing a head. Or something.
Peace.

Is 'there is no answer' not an answer?

There is more than one koan?

The point of all such k?ans is that there is no answer. What is the point of asking meaningless questions? Entirely to disrupt rational thought and make the mind jump the tracks that normally confine it. Since that is the only way to get at enlightenment, which also defeats rational thought, then even humble questions can do the job. But how does one answer the question to the satisfaction of the Zen master? With an answer just as meaningless and irrelevant as the question, or perhaps by giving the Zen master a beating himself

I say just start hitting yourself in the head and then you'll have your answer.

I disagree.

> What is the point of asking meaningless questions?

The questions aren't meaningless... quite the opposite.  One may ask why paint a picture of an apple tree, when you can go out and sit under the apple tree?  Is the painting meaningless?

koans won't work on me because its boring exercise.

its the attempt to stop the student from thinking, automatically.
