Im a noob and hope to start hunting this season. I was wondering what types of psilocybe mushrooms grow in south florida. I know people that find P. Cubensis everywhere but i haven't heard of or seen any other species of psilocybe around here.

Re: I'm new to Florida. What do I do??? [Re: Jondspops]

So a lot of beginner Florida hunters have been asking the basics so here is a quick overview on how to find active mushrooms in Florida.
One - you are lucky. This is the easiest place in the country to procure what you are after.
First scope out some bovine pastures in your neck of the woods. Use google earth to help or just drive around. Look for spots with a good place to park your car or bike within walking distance. This could be on the backside of a field or a local park or store etc.
Meanwhile go to the main hunting and ID page and make sure you know what species you are looking for in your state. (Top sticky threads).
Ok you know what you are looking for. (Stick with cubensis, it's easy to learn) You have a place in mind. Get the balls to go there and check it out. Look for any species growing directly on dung. Poke around. Check in the tall grass and in the shade. If you see anything growing on dung you know this is a spot to come back to. Right now you might not find a ton of actives but any dung loving species is a good sign that your favorite will soon appear. If you see nothing growing on dung, this might not be the best location.
Don't mess with the patties. Look, don't touch.
Keep going back. As it gets more humid and stays between 65 and 85 degrees things will pop. Don't expect to see tons of stuff covering everything. You have to be patient and deliberate in your search sometimes.
Be observant. Take pictures. Get habitat shots, cap, stem, base, gills. Use scissors or some device to sever the stem. Don't yank it out and damage the mycelium. Make a spore print. Place the cap on a piece of paper or foil and let it sit for a day. Then take a pic of what came out of the cap. Bring the pics here and post in the main hunting/ID thread with a proper id request. The TIs will take a look and tell you what you found. With any luck you'll be moving over to the experience threads to figure out what to do with them...
Be careful. Have fun.

HAHA yes this thread is going to be good soon. I'm going to go out to my spot sometime this week, I have to hunt at night though which sucks otherwise id get lots of sweet pics.

Also is it possible to ruin a field? When i first found my field it was pretty fruitful, i feel the more i go the less i find, but this also could be due to weather.

Yes DiscoBiscuitsTrip you can ruin a field, thats why Jondspops was saying bring scissors and don't flip the patties, if you damage the mycelium (basically mushroom roots) bad enough it can cause the mycelium to no longer fruit, meaning no more mushrooms for a while, and if a field is damaged badly it can take up to a year, even longer, for it to start producing again :frown:

I usually just snap them off, and they still release there spores. I also always walk around with one in my hand to spread spores. I might just go out tonight I cant stop thinking about it haha, I've just never been to my field alone so Im kind of hesitant. It hasn't rained but I know my field is flooded cause I went a little while ago but the humidity was way to low and I was with some people that had bad vibes, humidity is looking a little better and have had some hot days so I might just say fuck it.

I was definitely being overly optimistic tonight, field was dry as shit. I brought home a decent amount of white cow patties though . just threw it all in a container and added a bunch of water hopefully some cubes will start poppin had some really small white mushies on one of the patties.

Looks sort of like a cube on the grid paper, but why tear the stem up like that? I've never washed my mushrooms. Just dry them quickly and properly and the bugs will take off.

Long sleeves and pants are a must when the skeeters get bad. Get some good boots too cuz you Florida folk got snakes out the ass. Usually the stem will bruise where you cut it so no need to split it in half. Good luck on your future hunts!
