How do you lay the lid resting?

You don't....you never set it down....the jar should be open for no longer than 3 seconds.

So in order to achieve this, you have the jar laying on the towel. You unscrew the lid with one hand and hold it there, and with the other hand you quickly inject and squirt a cc? How many ccs by the way, per jar is ideal?

u unscrew it till teeth on lid and teeth on jar are no longer interlocked, and lift it, one part of the lid can stay touching the jar if ur just doing syringes.
its been so long since i used spore sryinge on grains, i think i used to do 1cc/qt if i had a good amount of solution left

Thanks for looking out guys. I updated the OP:

"Before reading any further, I do not use SHIPs. I open my jars in a SAB for all inoculations. Do not poke a hole in your filter."

You can use these lids with any size jar or any tek, including PF/BRF cakes. You can skip the dry vermiculite contam barrier and just use a filtered lid instead.

I sometimes use cakes to test cultures before I commit to a larger grow. I use these lids. Just open in a SAB, inject, close. Proceed as usual without the fear of moving the jar around.

I combined this tek with Dilated's Ironed Polyfil SFD Tek to make these for some jars I'll be knocking up with a syringe tonight. I'll be comparing them side by side with 2 lids I made with TL's tek.

I don't know... if those ironed SFD's will hold grain shaking.... maybe is better if you use it like dilated from outside...

I have grain that's been soaking 12 hours, and only 2 RTV lids ready to go, so I figured I'd try it out. For science! Worst case if they contam I'll g2g the other jars.

Yes, feel free to post your results here. That is slightly better than a coffee filter at best.

I'm hoping for a couple things to work in my favor here. The heat and pressure from the PC may possibly make the polyfill filter thinner and more sturdy. Also when I shake the jars I will definitely be babying them. One wonders if just plugging the hole with tight poly wouldn't be better. Oh well I'm committed now.

The lids I use now are actually two lids stuck together with silicone and a 3/8" hole through the center of both. Tyvek glued to the bottom of the top lid and thick felt glued to the top of the bottom lid.

The result is a nice clean looking, reusable and reliable lid that costs under 25 cents a piece.

I wrote this tek mostly with the intention of having a place to copy and paste from when someone doesn't know how to put it together. I'm very surprised at the attention it's actually getting. Just goes to show what we take for granted is sometimes unclear to others.

I just inoculated 6 jars WBS with 3 types of lids. My experience was as follows:

Jars 1-3: Combined this tek with Dilated's Ironed Polyfill SFDs made full size under the plastic lids. (Opened jar to inoculate)
-The SFD stayed nice and neat in the lid, didn't seem disturbed by normal shaking.

Jar 4: Used this tek with a rigid SFD under the plastic lid. (Opened jar to inoculate)
-The jar was quite hard to open with one hand and the SFD stayed on the jar when I lifted the lid (pretty much ruining my sterile procedure)

Jars 5-6: Used TL's lid tek with SHIPs
-Easy as usual, though not as sterile because of the needle being pushed through silicone.

Now to see if they contaminate!

I haven't used the plastic lids that much, but never noticed the SFD sticking to the jar. You may be tightening the lid too much. It should only be slightly snug. A little squeeze makes the SFD stay in the lid.

This may be why some people prefer to RTV the filter to the top of the lid.

Opening lids takes a little practice, but you will need to learn it if you ever want to move away from syringes.

I'll be impressed if the ironed poly jar doesn't contaminate. But, contamination in any of your jars could be from the spore solution.

Keep us posted.

Update to OP:

Plastic Lids v.2:

Here's how to make and use a plastic lit with small SFD RTV'd on top.

You can get 7 filters from a single wide-mouth size SFD. Use a quarter and pen to trace out 7 circles and then cut them all out with scissors.

Use a piece of sandpaper to scruff up the middle of your lid. This will help the RTV stick better. Then, use a quarter to trace a circle in the middle. This will help you know where to put the hole and RTV without getting so messy.

Drill a 1/4" hole in the middle of the circle.

Traced circle. I used a Sharpie with drilled hole.

RTV the inside of the circle in a narrow bead.

Then, gently place the cut out SFD over the hole and RTV. Push down directly in the middle and roll your finger to the outside edges of the filter. This will help push down the edges for the seal without pushing RTV to the middle and clogging the hole.

Finished

From underneath.

You can cover in foil and PC directly after if you want. The RTV will cure during the cycle. Just don't mash the foil dwn while wet or it may stick to the lid or move the filter around and break the seal.

I used the blue RTV because that"s what they had. Use any high temperature RTV though.

Do you find this is more efficient than v1 where it is just loosely under the lid?

Oh btw when are you planning to post your bulk substrate tek? I plan on using your methods from start to finish on my first WBS attempt here soon!
