1st grow / Rye mycelium stunted / diary

so about 2 weeks ago I thought hey, lets do this.. so I watched some videos read up on as much as I could.. even took notes soooo how I missed the gas exchange part of things is beyond me... anyways, I got everything I thought I needed minus some kind of gas exchange filter, I have 8 quart jars with white side up lids and 2 holes in the lids, Inoculated 8 Jars, tightened the lids and put tape over the holes, and put them in a warm dark place (80F) 5 Did NOTHING, 2 did a little bit and one took off very well.. for about the last 5 days they have done nothing.. so I tried to do a little more research on why the Mycelium stopped growing and found out the I guess I needed some way for the gas to exchange.
So, what I did was I took one of my really big see thru plastic bins that has arm holes cut in the side of it and cleaned it up real good and set the jars inside, stuck my hands in and started opening the jar lids (i even decided to empty some rye out, they were a little full) I first took the lid off the one that was doing really good and emptied some of it out and then lightly put the lid back on. I noticed what I emptied out had mycelium on em so I thru some of em in side the other 5 jars that were doing nothing. put all the lids back on em lightly..
I was just reading more about how people say they should be in a dark place, and some were saying it's ok for them to be in the light, that mycelium grows better in the light.. so a little confused on this, every video I watched and everything else I read says to keep it in a dark place... So i took 4 of the 5 that were doing nothing and set them out and put the other 4 back in it's dark place.
I guess my concern is, leaving the lids on loose, Will that be enough and be ok for Gas exchange?

Light is beneficial during all stages. It helps develop a circadian rhythm much like we have. indirect light during colonization and direct during fruiting, on a 12/12 schedule.
Also you need something to filter out contaminants. I'd atleast get some more jars with proper filters going in the meantime because i wouldn't count on those jars.

Well I really need to count on at least one of these jars.. So should I re-tightin the jar that is doing good? Since I let out the co2?

It is fine to have colonizing jars receiving light. Try to incubate lower than 80° because while the myc may do well at that temp, contaminates grow better there too - mid 70's is good. If you leave your lids cracked there's a chance for contam, granted it's gotta s-curve under the lid and over the rim, but it can still happen. Do what you did before in a SAB but just crack the lids not take them fully off, that should be enough to relieve co2 build up if it happens. Edit: The darkness info is outdated. So is incubating at 80°F

Ok cool, so that should help me at least colonize one of the jars. I want to at least be able to make a spore print to save this kind that I have.

you need a ge-filter. dont you have polyfill or the option to buy a tyvek suit? if air gets out air also gets in that's why you need a filter. the grains that hit the bottom of your sab is no longer clean. light is always good in all stages of growth, keeping things dark is 20+yrs old info. 80F is also pushing it temp wise. mycelium creates heat of it's own as well. dont let it get any higher, but preferably a few degrees cooler. just put them on a shelf.

Well, Good news!!!! by unscrewing the jars every other day, everything worked out.. I have moved my rye to the Casing stage now. one more question is, I was reading that when the top layer of the casing is at 30% it is then ok to start fruiting? or should i wait for 100%?

Did you just case the straight grains? If so then yes when the casings at around 30% you should patch the most colonized parts with a. Little more casing then put into fruiting conditions.
Just a tip next time you should mix the grains with a bulk sub of some kind even for little trays, it will work much better than just cased grains and it's not hard.
With CVG (coir/vermiculite/gypsum) you can even just sterilize it in a jar in your PC and mix a qt of grains to a qt or two bulk sub and make trays

Oh, No i used Verm and Coir, someone had a tek on here about throwing in a 5 gallon bucket ect ect.. but anyways.. it's a coir/verm mix.. should i still wait for 30% or 100%?

Well you mix your grain spawn with your coir/verm then let that whole setup colonize to 100%
Then if you decide to case it you add your casing layer and let that colonize to about 30% then fruit it
Edit: you don't have to case for cubes but it does seem to help them with the pin set and also makes it more forgiving as far as humidity goes

Yes i'm going to post pictures a little later tonight actually.. My mini tubs reached 100%, my casing reached a little over 30% on some of them, I have them in 7 clear plastic containers inside a Giant container, in fruiting conditions (as far as I know) I sprayed em a little with sterile water and also sprayed the inside of the tub, the tub is at room temp, with 12/12 lighting (just went thru the first 12 hours of light and almost done with the first 12 of dark) basically for a light (for now) I just used a LED flash light and set it on the lid facing downwards, I herd any light is ok.. which is kinda cool cause the whole plastic container lights up. soooo... Added FAE, Light and water spray on the inside of the big tub and a little on the coir.
One question is.. Will humidity stay high in a 73-75 degree room temp with the water sprayed inside the tub? and will the Flash light be ok or do i need to upgrade my lighting? Thank you. Post pictures as soon as i can.

I'm having a huge problem getting pictures posted..(working on pictures) But, they are in the tub, i'm getting a lot of fluffy white mycelium all over the top of the casing, most are 80% covered. I give it a lot of FAE and 12/12 light, spray around the tub with water, it has been 4 days now, haven't seen any pins, i assume this is all normal?

It's hard to tell if those ae healthy for sure cuz they're blurry but they look ok just needing some fresh air. You say you give them plenty of FAE do you mean fanning?
Fanning a few times a day won't cut it you need holes in there letting constant fresh air in. You casings are being over taken because of the lack of fresh air
For trays like that your best bet is a SGFC that should help you get some mushrooms promptly

yeah i was fanning 3 times a day, Should i put some holes in the lid on top and the sides? and should i recase it? i take it all that mycelium taking over is bad?

I wouldn't say it's bad it just kinda negates the casing layer a bit, I personally wouldn't re case.
You should build a SGFC with the perlite and 1/4" holes every two inches on all six sides. It will be hard to keep humidity in the tub with just those trays, a monotub works to created it's own humidity because there is a lot of substrate with a lot of water evaporating off of it, I don't think your trays will have enough once you get holes in there

Maybe re-case them and fruit in open air, misting throughout the day.

Yea the ones that are mostly colonized I would put a light casing on, like 1/4" and the one that looks all dark still maybe just let hat one ride.
Yo don't have to worry about contams now that they're colonized and plus when you fan they get plenty of contam spores from the air.
What's your casing layer?

Casing is a Brick of Coco Coir and 2 quarts of Vermiculite, By letting them fruit in open air, how would i keep it humid? just by misting it often? once these are done and i get a good enough yield i'll be able to upgrade to a SGFC

that sounds more like a bulk sub. did you mix this up with the grains? You should have let that colonize to 100% and then add a casing layer of peat or jiffy mix if you want to.
it looks bacterial at best to me, how long has it been in fruiting conditions?

it's only been fruiting for 4 days, It's definitely not bacterial. i had a buddy say it was healthy mycelium. and I did let it get to 100% before i cased it
So i can afford the perlite, and i already have the container, Do i really need to recase it? is not recasing it going to effect it?

You don't have to re case especially if your going with a SGFC, but that tub you have will be too short or do you have a different one?
I was only saying to re case if you fruit in open air because you want to keep your sub moist but you could probably even get away without it there too.

That case is bigger then it looks, it's about as big as the one on the pftek #3 video, wondering why spacechildo says it looks bacterial to him? what would I be missing if it had bacteria? it's just very fluffy white mycelium no discolorations or anything

I guess it's just the pic then cuz it looks like there's only a few inches above the trays, you'll need about 4 inches of perlite so keep that in mind.
I really couldn't tell you man about the bacteria I can't see them very well but bacteria isn't always completely nasty looking sometimes it'll just look a little off.
When you have bacteria in a jar the mycelium gets a creamy look like ice cream but I don't know how it looks on a luck sub, probably still thick and creamy like I'd imagine.
Also bacteria isn't the end of the word if you did have it things will still fruit usually they are just more susceptible to contams.

if you added a top/casing layer of coir that might be why the growth look thick and weird in some places. are you fruiting them in a plastic container now for 4 days? with no holes? I thought they were still colonizing the bulk sub when I said it looked bacterial. I'm still thinking it might be, at least the last 2 close up pics, but its not the end of the world as said.
you really need a sgfc to fruit those trays in so get drilling and make it to specs, no thinking on your own now!

yeah they have been fruiting for 4 days in a container, the only air they got was when i opened it and fanned it 3 times a day.. I'm gonna try to take some better pictures here in a few minutes. I don't see any signs of Cobweb or Trichoderma, it's to fluffy to be Trichoderma

Ya you need FAE man, all day not just fanning. Fanning really just helps in an over humid situation or where you are ALMOST dialed in. Like he said if you could make a SGFC, mini Green house using a metal storage rack a humidifier and saran wrap. Beyond that.... A clear plastic bag with holes in it like a SGFC and find some way to prop it up to make a dome and mist the inside of the bag. Also may be the pic but it kinda looks a little dry.

OK! got this all finished up, what do you all think? it's not against the wall either, so that backside is getting air flow. got 4 inches of perlite on the bottom, holes all 6 sides.

The perlite looks a little low so just watch to make sure nothings getting too dried out, you have a lot of the surface area of the perlite covered so you have to be pretty careful
But those trays will thank you for that air soon I'd say

Thank you guys, do you think maybe setting a grate above the perlite would help with the over crowding situation?

Just get a compact flourescent bulb (the spiral ones) with a kelvin rating of 6500k. Alot even say Daylight on the box and that's the spectrum you want.

So I went out to Lowes today and bought 2 2150 Lumens natural daylight bulbs for those 2 lamps in my previous pictures. they didn't have anything higher than that at lowes unless i buy all new everything and i just can't afford all that. so I hope this will be enough..
Also i noticed yellowish liquid looking stuff on top of some of the mycelium that I believe i may know what it is. I hope all my constant reading and studying as got me some where lol, so here it goes, Mycelium Piss?

Lol mycelium has no bladder so not piss but it does excrete metabolites that unfortunately people have called myc piss a lot.
Metabolites could be from the myc fighting a contam, too high temps, or sometimes just to help it digest the substrate
I can't say for sure if that is metabolites or not though in that picture so just watch it and see if it gets any worse looking or bigger

I need someones opinion please, I had to move my SGFC back here because after the 12 hours light where it was.. we still need light in the room to see and that would cause them not to get 12 hours dark, we moved her back here (Lamps will go back tomorrow) and we have a lamp lit up in our room and it does not light up my chamer where it is now, they will get pure darkness.. My question is.. Is this far enough away from everything to still get the proper air flow?

I'm having a water evaporation problem now.. I notice when I mist.. I wont have to mist for a day or two... and I fan at least 8 times a day for 30seconds at a time. so I misted the sides of my tub to see how long it would take the water to evaporate... 8 hours later it's still there.. so basically that's telling me I have a FAE Problem.. which is confusing because I followed the SGFC Tek.. 1/4 holes 2" all 6 sides.. soo i'm a little confused as of what to do... because i know i need that water to evaporate for it to trigger pinning... might explain why i only see one tiny little pin..

Sometimes a first flush can take like 2 weeks. Successive flushes are generally cleaner, have bigger fruits, and are quicker from pins to fruits to spores. Recent flushes I had all took like 2 weeks, second flush was like 4 days. By day 5 half the second flushes are sporing all over my sub.

Run a box fan in the room not pointed directly at the tub but just moving air. If you can get your air going in a circular pattern that's what you want.

The first stages can be quite slow. They'll speed up as they mature. Once they get past the knotting and pinning stages they mature into full fruits in almost the blink of an eye.

You can dunk (For about 2 hours, NOT the 24 hours that is used with cakes), or you can increase misting to replace the moisture lost.

Just keep the rH up in the tubs, misting mostly. You may want to readjust your poly also. You can dunk, but misting works. You are not going to replace or even most of the lost moisture.

Yes you can, you just pour the water into the tupperware with the substrate.

Yes, maybe run some dowels or pvc thru your holes to keep the substrate submerged as it will try to float.

First flush was an amazing success, 80.6 grams dry, Took pictures but don't have access to post it at the moment. 2nd flush is on the way, one of the smaller tubs got contaminated with Trich on flush 2 so I tossed it outside away from the others.
Since I have clear containers i'm using for the substrate and shits growing all over the damn place, I took the substrate out of the containers put them upside down and placed the "what is now a cake" on top of the containers. Hope the second flush is good :-D
