Here's my unpopular opinion:
I think New Vegas was a lot better than 3. The world was far more vast and diverse compared to 3. Fallout 3 just mostly had a drab, gray color and feel to it; but New Vegas had so many different locations ranging from the brightly-lit strip, to an indoor greenhouse inside a vault, and the many different faction bases and towns. I feel like 3 was mostly just the same dark, gloomy place throughout the map. It didn't appeal to me at all. I also felt like I was constantly running away from overwhelming amounts Super Mutants and whatever else that attacked me in huge numbers. To be honest, when I first rented Fallout 3 I never had any intention of playing the series ever again because of that. Fortunately, my dad got me New Vegas as a gift for my birthday (mostly because it was like $20 and touted as GOTY), but I still had no desire to open or even play it. Luckily, my boredom submitted to the prospect of a new game, and New Vegas captivated me. I told my dad about how much I loved it and he just laughed at my nerdism.
After that I came back to Fallout 3, but still wasn't able to enjoy like I did New Vegas.
Even though you guys say New Vegas was full of bugs and that it's basically a clone I felt it was a lot more refined than 3. As someone stated above, V.A.T.S. was a lot better and easier to use, and weapons were better and more diverse IMO, though I still hate the fact that the Fallout games have never offered much in upgrades or mods.
Anyway, I pretty much just feel like New Vegas was the better of the two, and recommend that anyone who hasn't played the series before try that one out first.

I think what a lot of people liked about FO3 myself included, WAS that drab and dreary world. It truly felt like we were living in the aftermath of nuclear war. I understand why NV did what it did and I still enjoy the game for what it is, I also like a lot of the game mechanics they introduced like factions, hardcore mode, iron sights, etc, but to me the world just didn't hold a candle to FO3.

Anyone who is playing this on the PC, head over to www.nexusmods.com, just like TES, there are plenty of mods to fix issues in the game... everything from rebalanced guns, skins, effects, and enhanced survival play.
My favorite is the weapon mods; anyway-- check them out, they breathe tons of new life into the game.

I loved old world blues DLC so much. The writing was so good for me because I love sci-fi. You get to uncover the floating brains back stories when they were human.
