Thank you very much for your reply ! and my apologies for the noob questions.
Do you keep the bags inside? somewhere warm and dark?
And then once the myc takes hold you layer the cardboard in the plastic containers? Were those containers sealed?
Last year I tried growing, I put a pinecone with subs growing from it in a plastic plant pot with pieces of wood and watered it, the myc spread to the other pieces of wood, but I didn't realise one needed to keep it going over spring/summer/autumn, so that's as far as I got, I wonder if it would come back to life..
I had tried myc and cardboard in snap lock bags, and jars, but they went mouldy, I assume it was because it was too wet and I had them completely sealed.

Great to see some updates Olive!!
Didn't realise you'd moved across the land.
Good to see you're back at it in SA, as this thread is a wealth of useful information for outdoor sub patches.
I'll post some pictures if my own patch fruits in the coming weeks.
Keep up the great work, love reading about it!

Certainly no issue with your questions man, I'm a noob 2 All the techniques I use have been gleaned from threads posted from mush more experienced cultivators than myself. Some of my faves are Ryath, UK explorer, Bloodworm, Psylosymonreturns and Sporulator. Type their names in the search bar and be blown away as I continue to be at their wonderful efforts.
Keep the bags inside, yes, though I find the myc stalls in the warmth so the colder months are best for mycelium expansion
Once the myc has has colonised the majority of it's cardboard taco I soak some some pine shavings, wring out handfuls (important to remove as much excess water as possible). A few handfuls go into the base of each container, then place the taco onto of the shavings then add a few more handfuls of shavings....not to much though as you don't want to smother the mycelium. I have found that leaving the ends of each taco sticking out of the pine shavings allows the mycelium to breathe. The mycelium tendrils will start growing from the ends of the tacos into the shavings.
The containers I use have lids, it creates a moist micro climate. Ensure you drill air holes in the side and or lids of the containers to allow for FAE.
Alota my patches I haven't watered through summer this year, a lot to do with logistics, but also because I have found that subaeruginosa mycelium goes dormant in the hotter months, it may even be detrimental watering hardwood tubs and patches during summer. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that you get fruit outa your pine cone pot

Hi again and thank you for your help and the information, it is very much appreciated.
Wow, yes there is so much to read and learn here, it should keep me busy.
I'll let you know how I go with the methods.
I had re-wet my 'pinecone pot' the other day and I can already see some new mycelium growth

Wow just stumbled upon this thread, that was a sweet set up and in WA!. This pretty much confirms subs can survive outside in other parts of this state given the right conditions Any comments on differences between SA and WA subs, both seasons start a bit later and seem to not really grow in wood chip beds- more in the natural environment. Maybe they are the same 'strain' vs melb subs. This looks to be a good option after all the trouble we get from locals and authorities down south.

man, I love this thread. So much valuable information, thanks a lot
I've started getting interested in mycology again after a few years, winter came around this year an i was like, oh yeah theres mushrooms to be found
Been looking for gymnopilus purpuratus and have some very nice finds. Gots about 30 g dried, actually doing a bioassy tonight so i'll update on that later in the appropriate thread.
As far as subs go I've been down to b town twice this season, found a new spot and am starting to colonise mycelium on cardbord, actually just tranfered some myc to new beds using red gum mulch, pine shavings and ripped up card bord. Very exciting! cant wait to start my own local patches if anyone has any suggestions of places in the perth area to spawn i'm all ears

Hello, hope all you sub growers are all well n growing hard All good my way, ina internet reception black hole which makes posting a tad difficult
Been a nice start to sub season here with some of my home patches bursting into life.........
West Australian subs This patch was started 2 years ago from a tub that was two years old and had fruited once in its second year This patch did not fruit last year and has fruited in its second year. This is my first successful interstate tub to patch transfer that has fruited............ Its a mix of pine chips and eucalypt and received no summer watering, ive been watering it with 20 lts rainwater each day since i first saw pins a few weeks ago as it been a little dry

South Australian subs This patch also started 2 years ago from tacos of SA sub myc. Just 3 fruits at the end of last season........... A mix of pine chips and eucalypt, this patch received lotsa summer watering because of its close vicinity to some camelia's. Been watering this one as well

We now await the other 43 home patches and 24 tubs of SA phenotypes to burst into action

This thread is amazing. Very inspiring Olive! Any chance you could answer a couple of questions for me. I'm having trouble trying to find the answers online... I have put some sub butts in a dampened cardboard taco and have them indoors at the moment. I read that you said previously to keep them indoors, but that mycelium grows quicker in colder temps. Should I put them in my laundry which is much colder than the rest of the house? And I think I read to open the bag with the cardboard taco every day to give it some fresh air? Should I mist spray the cardboard at all to keep it damp? I wasn't even sure how damp the cardboard should be initially and I'm worried it wasn't damp enough. I gave it a good soak and then left it to drain while I went out for a quick hunt (I'm lucky enough to be able to walk out the back and have some good habitat to forage amongst!). You have inspired me to get a lovely outdoor patch in motion for next year so I would love any advice you can give. I've read through so many of your posts and have learnt so much already. So a massive thanks for sharing all this info with us!
*****just re-read the previous page where you said to keep the bag open slightly and mist if it gets dry, so sorry for asking again! So does this mean that I keep the sandwich bag slightly open for as long as the cardboard taco is in there? And then as soon as the cardboard is nicely covered in myc I chuck it in the outside tub? Thanks again!
