Quote:

i thought that this might be because the water is being used, and the material is pulling away as it gets dry, is this normal?

Yes it is.

his one lone chunk of mycelium now has a blue/grey tinge to it,

If it keeps that color and it doesn't grow anymore then you should be ok.

any suspicions on whether the mycelium will take over the rest of the jar now, or will it just grow around this area and/or go bad?

Wait and see....

i didn't notice anything in the salting FAQ relating to doing it while still in 'vitre'.

And you won't, it is only to be used after birth. There's no tek that tells how to treat any contamination before birth. If the substrate contaminates inside the jar, all you can do is wait and see if mycelium can overrun the contaminant, even if it does, you'll have to crumble the cake and see if anything is growing on the inside.

To speed up colonization time at that stage of development you should un tape the holes and flip the jar, that way Co2 will exit much faster and mycelium will colonized the last portion, that is, if the jar is not contaminated.

thanks lamblancer, maia. the one i removed the chunk from has started progressing towards the empty spot, still to be seen if it'll actually grow over it. the one pulling away is actually turning a little blue itself, but it also may be the bottle casting some optics on it. wish luck.
