The Potency of Brown Rice Flour
    #2003825 - 10/13/03 12:21 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I know there have been many different posts concerning this, and that is part of my problem. There are so many conflicting views to this question it is hard to decide. So once and for all (though probably not):

Are there potency issues with Brown Rice Flour?

Please post opinions/personal experiences with this as a growing medium. Thanks to everyone.

Regarding the potency of mushrooms that have been grown using a substrate that has Brown Rice Flour as a main ingredient.

I have often heard that grain is better. But I personally can't offer much advise on this topic. Just spawn it to straw+poo and you'll never be able to tell the difference. I have also heard that millet works very well as far as potency is concerned.

Well, it has been a friend's experience that mushrooms grown on spawned 50/50 cow poo/scotts 3in1 are fleshier, bigger, darker and more potent than those grown from BRF cakes. You also should use agar and get a really pure culture and then put an agar wedge is some rye and spawn. If your worried about potency this is what it takes.

So as of right now the general consensus is that while Brown Rice Flour doesn't promote fruiting very well, generally there is no major difference in potency when compared to other growing mediums?

Yeah, that's about the jist of it.  The nutrients run out pretty quickly if your substrate is only BRF+verm.  You most likely won't get more than 2 good flushes.  But like I say, just spawn it to some straw+poo and you will thoroughly enjoy the results.

so you're saying you should take fully colonized BRF cakes, and try and spawn them to straw/dung? in an outdoor patch of sorts? or do people make casings with it? And as for the potency issue of BRF vs. straw/poo is there really a noticeable difference, or is it just easier in people's experience to produce better fruits more easliy with straw/poo? Assuming you follow good advice for fruiting BRF cakes, does an optimally (is that a word?) grown BRF cake differ significantly from fruits grown on the straw/poo?

to make a long series of questions into 1, is it worth it for a first time grower to change his plan to include straw and poo, or should he just go ahead with dunking/rolling the BRF cakes as planned.

Personally I'm going to go for the BRF cakes, then dunk and case them. Any opinions on that for a first time grow?

only my opinion which is probably that i'll be doing the exact same thing. Except i'll probably do dunk and roll cakes as well. I'm going to try both.

Yes, you take the fully colonized BRF/verm cake and crumble it apart and spawn it to straw/poo. You can do this either indoors or outdoors, I have never attempted an outdoor grow though, so I cannot tell you how efficient that is. You can case the straw+poo with more verm to act as a moisture retainer and a contaminant shield (suggested).

Yes, the fruits of a BRF cake compared to a colonized straw/poo casing are much different. Not only will the straw/poo make larger, more potent mushrooms...they will provide you with many more flushes.

MycoCat: You're right on target. I'm sure you will have no problems with that set-up.

Good luck guys.

hmm, maybe i should try and get some straw and poo... Are these fairly easy to come by? my guess would be that i'd have to find some sort of agriculture/farm supply place? i'll check the faq.

I don't think that is the consensus at all, mycocat. THere is a difference in growing mediums.

for any of you viewers following along at home, and are also interested in converting your BRF jars into Straw/Poo casings, heres a nice link to a grow log outlining such a procedure.

Care to be more specific? Meaning what growing mediums have you used to get the best potency? And just how big would you say the difference in potency is?

Sorry about all the questions, I just like hearing what people who know what they're talking about think.

And I guess that would be assuming you know what you're talking about, which I hope you do.

There is a difference in the growing mediums, yes. But the differences are fairly minute and it basically boils down to personal preference (i.e. faster colonization times, more potent fruits, larger fruits, etc. etc.). There is no super-substrate as far as I know. Your original substrate is fairly inconsequential as far as I'm concerned...it's the spawn/casing that's truly important.
