Try simply soaking the grain for 24 to 36 hours and then draining well. Change the water once or twice during the soak.
This has worked for every grain my friend has tried so far. He hasn't had a go at popcorn yet.

not sure if this is the accepted way of doing things but it works fine around these parts.
popcorn: soak for 24 hours then simmer for a hour. rinse and let drain for 30 min or so. put in jars and pc for 70min.
bird seed or parakeet seed in my case: soak for 12 hours, i do not simmer, rinse and drain. then into jars and pc for an hour or so.
hope that helps.

Though just a beginner, I did many, many jars. So far the quickest & healthiest mycelium has come from cooked organic brown rice. I don't even measure. Just throw in a pot, add spring water(also organic from outback) bring to boil under high flame, once boiling, I stir and reduce the heat to a very small flame, and cover with the lid. Then, I check it every 5 minutes, stir, and re-cover. It is ready once there is no water left in the bottom of the pot when you stir (or 'fluff')it up.
Out of 48 jars, 12 of them by this method, all 12 are WAY beyond the other Teks that were implied on the same day.

soak for 12 hours. Drain unitl not a drop drips. Tyvek filter on top. Load pc at 16 psi for 90 min. Shake when still hot.

i dont soak at all. i use 1/2 cup of wbs + 1/3 cup of water loaded into pints and pc'ed @ 15psi for 1.25 hours. the key to getting it correct is to shake the jars when they are still very hot (i have to hold with a towel because of the heat). after they have been shaken, put them back in the pc to cool off. this always works for me. i buy the cheap wbs at my local chain grocery store.
