The Land of Nod
    #2003358 - 10/12/03 09:33 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I may be posing a redundant question here, God knows when looking back on my CCD days I tormented my teachers with it enough...

After Cain slew Able, technically the only people on the earth were Adam, Eve and Cain. So who the fuck was in the land of Nod for him to go live with?

In later passages of the Bible it talks about him living with the people of Nod...but technically there should have been no people. So what is going on here folks?

In school (I went to Catholic school...) we were taught to view most of the Bible up until the time of Abraham as kind of religious fables. Adam and Eve are just a representitive story of the Creation.

That's what I was "taught", anyway  :smirk:

Why is the time of Abraham the cut-off for what's true and what's made up?

Just curious, if you know.

It isn't. The very first writings of the Bible were made during the Babylonian Exile.

MycoCat: "After Cain slew Able, technically the only people on the earth were Adam, Eve and Cain. So who the fuck was in the land of Nod for him to go live with?"

After the french mark it is hard to say; yet, on your former remark I progress. I know not the extent, but i'll try. It appears from what I see a lesson is trying to be explained in the most rudiment means possible. I have one for you; do you know the mechanics of a pink star?

You could pull a multitude of lessons from this:

-Things are not always what they seem, or more specifically, just because it's written down somewhere does not make it true
-The Bible is full of stories that conflict with one another, so is anything written there true, or is it just a tale?

And if you want an example, ponder this (taking into account that if the Bible was written by men, then the time frame spoken about is the one that applies to men): If God created the world in seven days, then how is there millions of years between species if everything was created with a few days of each other?

That God created the world in seven days is one of the must fundamental principles of the Bible, is it not? Anyway, its 4:30 in the morning, maybe I'll have a more concrete argument when I get some sleep...or maybe I'll realize I might be wrong, eh?

I agree with trendal, i think by know even hard headed Christians have come to the conclusion that the creation is more symbolic than fact. In other speculation it could also mean that Adam and Eve were just oe of many races put on Earth by one of many God.
Remember Yaweh didnt want anything to do with Cain anymore so he would probably allow him to go do the nasty with any other race. The belief in fate really kicks in in this one. But in reality i do belive the whole Creation thing is symbolic and the 7 days didnt have to be what we consider days today.

I thought that Lilith was a lesbian, like the first one, and then they named that Fair after her?!

Why is the time of Abraham the cut-off for what's true and what's made up?

I think that Abraham's wedding "certificate" is the oldest historical document known other than the Bible itself. I was told that it is the oldest part of the Bible that could be corroborated with other documents of the time.

The whole Lilith and Cain thing isn't true, because in the Bible it tells us who Cain's wife is, because he has something like over 100 children (sorry, can't remember her name, don't have access to a bible at the moment).

And as for God not wanting anything to do with Cain, that isn't true either. The Mark of Cain was put on him so no one would kill him, or the wrath of God would smote his ass seven-fold. God was very much a part of Cain's life, just not in a good way anymore. Every time Cain got happy (began to build a life for himself, found happiness with the beast-men after he left Nod) God either kill everyone he was close to or banish Cain from that land again.

So God was pretty much an asshole for quite awhile. At least until the New Testament anyway.

Yep, I think the general consensus is that the Jewish people pulled the old testament out of their asses. It's not literal, just a collection of stories passed down, a sprinkle of nonfiction, and a lot of plagiarism from Babylonian myths.

Just curious.. does anyone know what the most accurate version of the bible is, in english? I want to read some of it.

at this point i think we can be relatively certain seperation exists as a fallacy of finite perception, and the only barrier to infinite creativity is a preimposed notion of certainty and artificial conditioning. nothing is without origin

well... i believe the sun was created on the 4th day? And since we judge a day (24 hours), by the sun, who's to say how long a day was? a day could have been a week, month...a thousand years? a millenium?

Didnt god say that in heaven a thousand years was a day and a day a thousand years. This might stem from the belief that that the past present and future are all happen at the same time and linear time is an illusion created by the brain. I think that was the God's explination for knowing the future according to Sumerian texts. And the Jews did base the old testament on their own interpertation of older stories and myths of The Creation.

No one could ever know how accurate one Bible is as compared to the other.. unless the original documents are still around... but still..

Although they're not exactly the original documents, the Qumran documents (Also known better as The Dead Sea Scrolls) are preserved and are still about, although one would have to learn Ancient Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic to read them. They are, to date, the closest in time to the original documents.
