Casing - Cold Shock before or after crumble?
    #2003150 - 10/12/03 08:14 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Making a casing soon, do I want to crumble, cover with 50/50, let the mycelium colonize it, then coldshock, or cold shock then crumble?

I'm sorry, I don't have an opinion. But isn't cold shocking only for when growth is stalled?? Sorry, I'm a novice, and only thought it was necessary for this reason.

Peace

Im a novice too, but from what I read coldshocking and dunking is whats normally done when cakes are birthed. Coldshocking initiates pinning. I dont think I want pins while my mycelium is still buried under the casing =/

After you case it let the mycelium show signs of growth, ie small patches on the 50/50 layer. Then IF you want to induce pinning you can cold shock it. Cover the casing in plastic and put it in a cold place for 12-24hrs. Shocking is mostly used when a casing doesn't pin. Or to induce pinning at a specific stage.

cold-shock right before birth. After crumbling place back in incubator to mend and grow into casing layer. Patch once. Cold shock. birth.
