Roger,
I was under the impression, that the situation with mycelium growth is the opposite to what you're saying. I thought that a wet summer leads to better mycelium growth, whereas a hot dry summer would hinder mycelium growth. Have I been wrong all these years?

2 hours wandering round Preston Cemetery today gave me about 70 liberty caps, 2 big fly agarics, and loads of other stuff that I'm trying to identify now.
Anyone else had any joy in Lancashire yet?

Well when cultivating cubes, the temperature for mycelium growth effects it alot, at 86f the temperature is ideal for cubes. so I suppose this is the case for libs too

A warm summer with lots of rain gives the best situation for vegetative growth.
Extremely high temperatures would inhibit growth, but I do not know if these limits have been established for liberty caps. Perhaps we have reached them this summer.
Lack of rain inhibits growth. So this summer was quite bad really.
The productivity of autumn fruiting may however not be entirely dependent on the extent of vegetative growth during the summer. Previously established large colonies may be able to produce similar levels of fruiting to previous seasons if food in the soil has been replenished, and rain during the season is plentiful.

Well i thought i would check back in and let you lot know we have had about 1 burst of rain for about 10 minutes this week. Thats it in september!
I am hoping october will be a better month
How is everyone else in the UK doing?

I'm in one of the driest parts of the country, and the ground is dusty dry atm.  however there is rain forcast for the next two days.

ive found some near some horse fileds... near where theres been buil ups of horse poo just poking in throug the grass... then alot of other weird mushrooms growing outta the horse poo im not even sure wat they r and i got no decent camera to take a pic with, i guess i dunno wat to do wi them

Didn't see any lib growth untill mid to late october last year and then the fields exploded with growth, itv wasn't the driest of summers either.

I found libs mid August last year in the Peak district. They always seem to come up earlier up here

just looked at the long range forecast
Saturday 11 October to Friday 17 October
This looks like being quite a wet week overall, with low pressure firmly in control. At this stage it is rather difficult to assess quite where the low pressure will be centred, but if it is out to the west, southerly winds will make it feel much milder than the previous week.
It looks like a cloudy week for most places with periods of rain. The heaviest rain is most likely early in the week, easing a little as the week goes by to give some brighter and even sunny spells.
Saturday 18 October to Friday 24 October
During this week the low pressure is expected to slip to the south of Ireland, thereby pulling in southeasterly winds across much of the country.
It still looks like being a miserable cloudy weekend with further periods of rain, which will move up from the south to cross virtually all of the country

My parents live in Lincolnshire and have a very productive maj mush (libs) field right next door! Lake at edge of field, populated by cattle through the summer. I picked 600 mush in about 2 hours last season. I use that field as a barometer to go out hunting nearer home. I picked on November 11th last year and can report that their field is empty so far this year.

Thanks, that's helpful (the weather report and the field observations).
I am pondering going "out" this saturday and getting a random train northwards to the nearest fieldy looking place (basically I don't have a clue), but maybe next sat will be more hopeful...
When I can drive this will be so much easier...
Anyone from hampshire (or nearby) willing to recommend a date (weekend) and area (NOT asking for specific location, just something like the new forest or around Andover etc.)??
Some people at my friend's college have had luck finding libs it seems, trading them for large amounts of skunk, but apparently it was only 50-100 or so and they were very withered/small...

I drove to a spot in hampshire that has produced for the last 4
years, and there was nothing evident there today, not even other
grass species, so we still need a bit more rain down here.

When I was a kid, I used to walk for miles searching for productive fields. As soon as I could drive I found it more difficult to go searching, because you have to find somewhere to leave the car which is not always easy.
I've recently got back into the world of mush and intend to get a digi camera to take some shots of the conditions I find them growing in. I've been pretty amazed as it was always long grass, but my parents field is like a putting green and they're all over the place!
The one common denominator with all my sites though, is cattle or horses. Not saying it's the norm, just my observation.

The ground is still dry here, it?s all dusty and lots of the grass is still yellow
I just check the forcast for the next few days, it was going to rain on Tuesday but they cancelled it again 
I blame global warming

Shocking isn't it. Mid October and hardly a drop of rain and days when I was sweating on t-shirt and jeans after a walk uphill.
Went hunting on saturday for first time and found a lot of liberty cap look-a-likes (well they looked like them at the time at least... ), and A. Muscaria which has left me wondering what to do with it.
