non active: pholiota squarrosa..!!
    #2002158 - 10/12/03 09:01 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I found these a few weeks ago(sept.28), woods of southern New England... I key them out to be a scaly pholiota,(pholiota squarrosa)... .. alot of pines around the area with a few oaks and maples.. the stump they were on was pine. There are alot of mushrooms that make up this group so I'm not 100% sure of this ID,, but it keys closest to the scaly pholiota. The only lookalike referenced by Lincoff in this book is P. squarrosoides* has slime layer. Which my specimen definatly did not... Was classified as edible but in recent years reclassed as poisonous due to gastric discomfort, within an hour after being eaten.

-dry yellow brown cap, scaly
-yellow/brownish gills attached close, persistent ring/veil remnants present
-yellow brownish stipe, scaly
-clustered at base of stump

:National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms/Gary Lincoff. publisher Knopf pg.716

"this book is better than what I've been working with"....

They could be either Pholiota squarrosa or P. squarrosoides. When I've seen Orson Miller distinguish between them, he takes a couple drops of water and puts them on the cap, then rubs it with his fingertip to see if there's a slime layer. If it's dry out, you won't be able to tell without the water.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the tip TM,, I was walking in the woods today and came across more pholiotas,,, it's been drizzling all day,, these were indeed slimy... so I guess this group was probably P. squarrosoides.. Glad you responded..Thanks..
