big leucopaxillus???? Or some other monster!!!
    #2002389 - 10/12/03 12:12 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

I found these mushrooms in southern New England:(Sept 29 2003)

I can't find my notes on these right now so bear with me...

-mychorizal(sp) leaf and stick litter, by the side of the road
-growing single- gregariously,
-cap white to off white, concentric circles,(slightly darker) 4-20 cm's across
-pileus thick, spongy
-lamellae, seperable
-margin slightly wavy, tapered
-gills attached slightly decurrent, crowded, white to off white as the cap
-stipe thick 3 cm's, on larger specimens, white, spongy
-base bulbous, cottony spongy.
-fruiting from a thick mycelial mat, when I say thick I mean it was like 2 inches of pure white cotton candy/marshmallowy goodness...
-scent very robust, bordering on unpleasant.
-taste,, nothing really notable plain...
-spore print cream colored.

The closest I can key these mushrooms to in my book:

National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms; by Gary Lincoff, publisher Knopf:

Is the white leucopax,(leucopaxillus albissimus). Pg. 767

"It is reportedly edible, but most varieties are said to be unpalatable and hard to digest". (Lincoff)

I noticed a few very slight variations, compared to the keys given in the book... but this is the best I can do... anyone have a closer ID????

Leucopaxillus is a possibility. They can be pretty tough to tell apart from the big white Clitocybes.

David Arora's method to distinguish between them is to throw the mushroom against something hard and dense, like a roommate's head. If the mushroom survives, then it's probably a Leucopaxillus. If it explodes, then it was probably a Clitocybe. You can also try hiding it in that roommate's closet. If it rots and goes nasty within a couple weeks, then it was a Clitocybe. If not, then it was a Leucopaxillus.

Yes, that's paraphrased from his book.

Happy mushrooming!

Lol, Ok then thanks TM,, it was a leucopaxillus,,, I left it out back for a week or so when found, it seemed to be in nearly as good a shape as when I left it.. also it had an almost rubber type of quality... like a slight ping would bounce and reverberate throughout its mass, kind of like resonance..."Mushroom tuning forks", anyway it was weird... my this is fun.... bye...
