Concerning Casing
    #2001102 - 10/11/03 07:59 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

After reading the Casing FAQ and various posts on the board, I was wondering if any additional humidity is needed inside the terrarium.

A post here said that perlite isn't required with casings, so does that mean that as long as I mist the casing regularly I don't need anything else, such as geolite or perlite? Thanks.

No perlite in casing. Keep casing covered with plastic wrap for about a week, to allow mycelia to colonize. This also keeps casing moist. Then after a week take casing off and expose to humidity, perlite or geolite in bottom of terr. or you can mist lightly.

Thanks for your advice, and just as a side note I did know not to put perlite inside the casing; rather I was asking if the terrarium needed perlite in it to raise humidity for the casing.

Thanks again, and if anyone else has any opinions please let me know.

Your casing should be kept at roughly 100%rH after it has fully colonized which is going to take more than just hand-misting. Perlite is, in my opinion, the way to go (unless you're going for automatisation). Wet the perlite in a solution of h20+h202 and use about a 1/2-1 inch of it in the bottom of your terrarium. Fan it 2-4 times a day.

You should get a hygrometer to measure the rH in your terrarium. Once the pinset starts forming you can lower the rH to about 85-90%. Fluctuate between 75-85F. There is a post somewhere in the forums about a theoretical way to get the casing to pin much more quickly than usual using this fluctuation in the "correct" way. I'll see if I can dig it up. Peace.

I found that link concerning the fluctuation of temperature to induce faster pinning. Here it is.

Can't thank you enough. But I was wondering if you've had any success with fluctuation of temperature on casings yourself? Have you tried it?

Or, for that matter, has anyone recently (or in the past) tried this method and gotten good results?

I haven't tried that particular method, but it's well-known that fluctuating the temperature induces pinning (most just shift from 85F to 75F once, though this new research may prove this practice ineffective in comparison). That particular method seems to make sense to me, though I have no personal experience with it...yet.

Please feel free to ask if you have any more questions. Peace.
