The Harvest
    #2000631 - 10/11/03 06:18 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I was wondering if there are any adverse effects from harvesting mushrooms before the veil comes away from the stem. The reason being I am using the Poor Man's Terrarium and am wondering what to do if the mushrooms get too big for the two liter bottle.

Should I just let them grow, or can it harm the mushroom if it is in too small of a space? Thanks.

Maybe I should have been more specific. Will the mushroom be harmed in any way if it is consistently being pressed against the side of the container (in this case the plastic of the two liter bottle) because it is getting too big?

Or is the general rule just to let it grow until the veil comes away from the stem no matter what? Thanks.

I don't think it should hurt that the shrooms are growing along the side of the container. I mean...people do the neglect technique, and the whole damn mushroom is pressed up against the container.

My Pet Wombat has the understanding that you can feel free to pick them whenever you want. The sooner you pick them, the more potent they MAY be. He says that still may be out for review, but that youre not goin to hurt anything by picking them early other than a little weight.
Secondly, anything in constant contact with a surface as pourous as plastic could lead to a spread in contams.
He says his opinion is to pluck em if they are touching the sides of your terrarium.

Thanks for the help, though the two of you have conflicting opinions. So anybody else have any ideas/opinions?

Yes, they should be fine. Although I am a novice myself, I am already experimenting with In Vitro, or will be anyway. It only seems that they are shaped funny in the end. We'll see.

Good luck, and be sure to let us know!

Thanks, and I'll let you know how it ends up. Right now I'm very indecisive as to whether or not I want to try Casing or just use cakes in Poor Man's Terrariums.

It's my first time, so any opinions? Thanks again.

I suggest going straight for the casings, it's easy as hell and you will definitely like the results as long as everything is kept as sanitary as possible.

To answer your original question, it is perfectly okay to let the mushrooms touch the sides. You should be misting with a solution of water and h202 (hydrogen peroxide), which prevents most contamination.

The in vitro tek is usually done in glass jars, therefore you wouldn't have to worry about contaminants being introduced through the pores (which is extremely uncommon anyway, to my knowledge).

As far as the potency issue, I think that it has been pretty much confirmed through bioassay that mushrooms (not including aborts) are the most potent by weight before the veil breaks (which makes sense to me, as the cycle of reproduction often takes away from alkaloid production in other entheogens...this is just my take on it and I can't provide any back-up for these claims).

Thank you very much, it's always a bonus when people put the time in to give detailed information. But I do have a question.

When you say I should be misting with a combination of water and hydrogen peroxide, do you mean when I'm misting the casing? Thanks again for your help.

Sorry, I should have clarified that.  You shouldn't mist your casings with the h20+h202 solution, but the sides of your terrarium.  Doing this would help to eliminate the problem of contaminants being introduced through the pores (along with helping to keep the rest of the terrarium sanitary)...which, like I said, seems to be extremely rare anyway.  Use distilled water, reverse osmosis (RO) water, spring water, (may be high in magnesium, which inhibits mycelial growth) or poo water to mist your casings if they're drying out.

Good luck, my friend.

Yeah, automatisation is really the way to go (moreso if you're dealing with a large-scale operation), but it's not really necessary and it can be kind of fun to put in the minimal amount of labor that is required to produce mushrooms. It's all just a matter of preference.

It's a lack of space rather than a lack of funds. I just don't have the room to put a terrarium in. But I'm going to try and work something out. Thanks for your advice.

Oh yeah, and could someone give me the ratio of hydrogen peroxide to water for misting the sides of the terrarium? I remember seeing it somewhere, but I can't find it at the moment. Thanks.
