As much as I'm fascinated by tool's music, some of their lyrics are bullshit.

I'm speaking specifically of Opiate. I've only listened to Undertow and newer. Their lyrics have gotten better over the years, for sure.

I saw lyrics quoted in someone's sig and had to check it out. The band is quite intelligent. I think they sometimes just write things they think will sound cool to their impressionable listeners. Listeners who are looking for anything that sounds different than the mainstream.

With Maynard's sense of humor, I could just see him writing pseudo-intellectual bullshit to see if people will suck it up.

I'm not saying their music doesn't have any substance, especially some of the things on Lateralis.

Maynard said "Think for yourself". It's kinda funny how many people I know who have blindly espoused Tool's philosophy, hence not thinking for themselves.

BTW, I do think their music overall is brilliant. Certainly some of the things they do with time signatures and such. Ear candy...

I find that every TOOL song has a lot of meaning on a lot of different levels... but that is just me...
Peace.

I think that it would be hard for his performance to be so moving if he only wrote the lyrics to sound cool to his listeners.

though, I know what you mean about all the tool freaks who seem to be following maynard word for word, like he is some sort of godsend instead of just another human being

I suppose that's true...

I've never been to a Tool show, but I saw A Perfect Circle at Lallapalooza. Very good show. I was a nice surprise to see James Iha playing with the band.

I heard about that, James Iha joining APC.
So that's a true rumor, then?
That's awesome, cuz I like APC and I love James Iha.

I think tool is just amazing. Im sure the doesnt make lyrics just because they sound cool, thats bullshit. I've seen interviews were they are totally against that. Guess you never know; they could even be aliens?

Yeah, I know what you mean, Maynard, and the rest of the band, always say think for yourself.
But you can tell words and music from the soul. I haven't listened much to Opiate, but regarding the newest stuff and Aenima, I don't think Maynard was writing anything but what he thought and felt. Everything, including the music tied in with lyrics, is way too conceptual to be bullshit.
But, I am speaking of newer stuff, not Opiate, so I dunno.

I've heard this theory, and maybe it is just due to the evolution in Maynard, and even the band in general. Opiate and Undertow are much more raw, pissed, and aggressive. But Aenima pushes further from agression into why society is fucked up, rather than just being pissed at the stupid fucking masses. In addition to wanting the shallow lifeless LA-ites to drown, The music and lyrics venture further from primal rage into the end of the cd of spiritual insight. Then Lateralus comes, which is so far into mind and spirit and One-ness. It seems to be, maybe even just a path in Maynards mind coming out in his lyrics, a journey from a primal pissed off agressive state slowly into understanding, and universal spirituality.

One of the strengths in their music is that it can be read into in many different ways, in many different levels. This realllllllllly complex interpretation is just that, and I don't think it could've been made if it was all bullshit. I know they realize there are impressionable listeners, but I know they don't make their music for their listeners, they're true artists.
I definitely see how people could take Maynard's word as 'gospel', like Jerry Garcia's, back in the day. Poor guy had to stop talking, because deadheads would do anything he said.....

Also, I think they share the same mentality of Bill Hicks, and also David Cross, both whom they're big fans of, in that there is shit that you need to be made aware of, and maybe they're just trying to do that. Or at least what they've said during live shows, 'inspire you to take what you have experienced home and create something wonderful with it'. sort of prying open your third eye...

Yeah, James is definately in APC. He's an awesome guitarist, and balances out the band well. Now they've got a five-piece!

Interesting points from all who responded.
