Testing straw for fungicide
    #1999084 - 10/11/03 02:08 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

After numerous failed bulk cultivation attemps, I am attempting to eliminate variable by variable what caused the failure. I would like to eliminate the possibility that the straw I used was coated with a fungicide. If I were to take a quart mason jar and fill with straw cut to 1" sections, fill it 3/4 up, then sterilize, then spawn with a PF cake, SHOULD the mycelia colonize the straw? I'm sure that this isn't the most ideal way to use straw, i'm just trying to ensure it isn't the problem.

The only problem I can think of with this is that the straw won't be "deadpacked" enough for the mycelia to grow through it, think that'll matter?

it should grow to the straw. make sure to watch for contams from the cake and all (as the straw is fully sterilized)
