I inoc. 12 pint jars of grain one week ago. Growth is incredibly slow. Maybe one jar is growing barely. So I have decided to do 12 1/2 pint jars. Does anyone have any ideas of what could increase coloniztion speed of grain? Maybe if I add some verm. or maybe some gypsum? I expose them to a heating pad but I am thinking of changing to an aquarium heater.

go aquarium heater. Keep at 82 degrees. 1/2 pints really won't be much substrate or spawn. Stick with pints just try again. Have you looked at all variables. draining grain? filter? enough air space? total darkness while colonizing? how are you innoculating? Sterile? Patient? It may take some time if they are not at optimal temps. Only worry about the gypsum or verm if contamination is your problem or excess wetness.

I soak grain for 24 hrs then boil for 1 hr, then pc for 1 hr. inoc through 1 hole in lid. My spores are over three months old, from my last batch on grain, so that could be a problem. My last batch was huge. I got like 30 shrooms. I am getting incredibly impatient.

patience takes practice. soak for 8-12 hours. Let drain for 30-45 min. load. PC for 90 min at 15-17 psi. make sure there's enough water in there. Do you have a hole for air exchange? Don't shake like crazy either. You probably will only need to shake once or twice the whole time. Also leave room to shake. 3 month old spores should be fine.

Having the proper temperature is not only ideal for myceila colonization, but as an effect o this, other contaminants won't have a chance to grow.
