1st Pan Cambo Sandose grow - Fail and Success update!
    #19978053 - 05/12/14 07:32 PM (10 years, 8 months ago)

So, I figured my 1000th post should be a decent contributing one, so here's my first pan grow: Panaeolus cambodginiensis "Sandose".

I didn't take a pic of my brf substitute agar, but they were done in small (100-200 mL) standard sauce jars and swiped around 16th april.

BRF agar sub was a PITA to take decent wedges for grain master inocs,
but once I got a piece jiggled out of the jar my rye berries stuck to it and the jars I shook like crazy looks like this today:

Jars was inocced with wedges 4/24, and I think the ones I didn't shake but rather just rolled the wedges into look like this:

As I don't have any manure yet I'm gonna try and g2g that first jar (all pics were of the same jar)
into 6 new ones.

I also think I'll shake the ones that are halted as I dont see what there is to lose.
Some posts say pans dont always recover after being shook, but there's only 1 way to find out if it'll work for me!

I've never worked with pan before, but I think the mycel looks healthy compared to other pan grows I've seen.
That black little dot is a bit worrying though

Update 11th July

First off, my coir trays failed. I must have measured up a qt too much water or something,
the cvg was dripping wet, but I went all :noob: and spawned it anyway.
Got 4 trays looking like this, only took a pic through the saran wrap:

The second set of g2g'd jars did much better, got my hands on some horse manure and spawned some trays on 6/21, all cased with cvg:

Yeah, my perlite was shit (not coarse enough) so I had to improvise some dub tubs.
This next one had some slimey stuff on it but I cased it anyway and hoped for the best:

The first one was fruited on 7/7, and the second one on 7/8.

Found a great surprise today (7/11) on the first one after 4 days in fruiting:

The casing looked pretty dry so I thought I'd give the old skooled drip shield a go
since I dont know how good my FAE is yet, I dont wanna risk leaving these pins wet and have them abort on me!

:super:

Update 12th July

So they've grown for another 20 hrs, looking great even though all of them are growing on the sides of the tray.
I think I need to up my misting from once in the morning to twice a day.

I misted the fuck out of the casing layer with my glad wrap mist shield covering the fruits,
but gave the fruits 2 light sprays from far away.
I wanna get a wall to wall canopy some day so this mist shield is just a crutch I use until I feel more confident.

Update 14th July

Just a few more pics, some fruits had fallen over and felt really dry.

The rest is first flush on 2nd tray, with a cluster and a fat ass that will be cloned!

Oh and btw, I've been misting my fruits directly for the last 2-3 days.
I haven't had any abort on me yet, but some get really cool color patterns on the hats from bruising though!

Update 15th July

This is pics from the second tray, the ice cream dome.

This guy is/was pretty cool:

After the first trays sporesplotion I've started picking them as soon as I see spores on their stem.
Also a bit easier to make the old compact cam zoom in on the shrooms after they're picked.

I have to correct something I said yesterday:
Quote:

spacechildo said:
(..) and I think the ones I didn't shake but rather just rolled the wedges into look like this:

I have 4 jars looking like that, and when looking through my notes it seems those 4 are a month old jars that just didnt germinate anything after inoc. So I apparently re-inocced them  :facepalm3:

Anyway, I g2g'd the jars from first pics in op to 6 more, and all the grains broke off real easily.
I did notice one marble sized chunk that didn't break off, and I marked the jar for caution.
Had a real :mad2: moment with some grains that was "impossible" to break up earlier and really wanna keep bacteria away this time.

Took some more pics of the other jars and noticed one more that's ready for g2g!

I hope it's all healthy, this jar is only 1 transfer away from the initial swipe.

Oh, and here is the jar I didn't shake like hell after dropping in the wedge. It's colonizing nicely but the other ones recovered from tiny spots all around the jar and will finish earlier.

Here's the last ones. I (hopefully) wont g2g any more jars, probably do some CVG trays until I stumble across some manure.

I'll be watching with interest! I have a bunch of these ready too and just got manure as well.

I notice such a wild variation in the mycelium of different pans... I have 2 cyanescens (Australian and Hawaiian), tropicalis, and 2 cambos (Sandose and Goliath) and they all look somewhat different... the cambos are thick and the Australian is barely there. So strange.

I have no other first hand experience but this on pan cultivation,
but the myc was really thick on brf agar sub and quite whispy on grains.
It seems to grow thicker together quite fast after having colonizing some parts of the grains,
in fact this almost grows a bit too fast all together for my lazy ass

I just realized what that marbled sized unbreakable piece I probably mistook for bacteria was . it must've been the agar wedge I stuck in my master

Very interested in where this grow goes.
I have a print that I'm terrified to do anything with.

Posting for future updates.

quick update, the master jars that weren't shaken like crazy is working their slow way:
Jar 3 I only dropped the wedge in and it's taking forever.

jar 1:                                                          jar 2:                                                            jar 3:
                  +

The jars from OP was g2g'ed to 6 more on 5/13 and looks eager to go:
I'm considering g2g'ing a couple of these again as they grow so fast and I still haven't stepped into any manure as of yet..

Also g2g'd the second fastest master jar (out of 5 total) into only 4 new ones on 5/15.
Didn't shake these after g2g, rather rolled the grains around trying to spread them.
There was a good reason why only 4, just can't remember it anymore :cuckoo:

I noticed a little greenish dark spot on 1 of these 4, tried to take a close up but both the cam and I suck at taking photos.

Keeping an eye on that one. Hopefully the next update will be of more spawned trays and less grain jars! :uhoh:

How do you guys think about patching my coir+verm casing layer?
its getting over grown by mycelium pretty fast now.
I know RR advocate against late casing already fruited subs, but this is plain CVG which should be pretty contam resistent.. :confused2:

I wouldn't worry about patching.  Just keep the casing moist.

And merely 12 hrs later some of them have started sporulating!

It is now 36 hrs since I woke up and found the first pins,
they've been growing like crazy in the 90F temp I have indoors :sun:

I printed the 3 that have spores on their stems, took some pics right before and after:
(I apologize in advance for my poor picture taking skills, they didn't quite turn out as I hoped)

Tried taking some upskirt photos but couldnt get my cam to focus on the correct shroom,
and one that got hit a bit too hard by misting droplets and have bruised some:

So they abort before they even get to pop up and say hello :uhoh:

I thought my 1st pinset was really crappy but most grew around the edges so I upped some on the misting.
The 2nd tray looks a bit better, think the cv casing layer was a bit thicker
and it got pins in the center as well.

Is there really that much of a difference to a knot or what they are when the misting kills them
whether the water droplets come from a syringe or a gentle mist?

I thought the wet feet dry heads meant you could spray their feet a bit..:confused2:

it's not the misting that kills them it's just you really need to make sure it dry's before doing so again, ii've fucked up my fair share before finding shroomery trying to find that happy medium but my caps always ended up looking like thatand i got much better results just waiting and watering the sub, there is no species of mushrooms in which you CAN'T mist it's just some seem more sensitive  then others, cube pins will sometimes triple in size during a dunk where pans would simply abort

Ah, quadruple facepalm
I've made sure to keep it wet while I sleep etc by just misting a bit extra even when its still wet.

I think they look fucking awesome like that, I'll try to let the sub dry out more before misting again though.

If I just jiggle and shake my cheap mister a bit tiny droplets come out so that's just an easier way than using a syringe..I hope.

Evaporation is a key pinning trigger so you want the casing to dry out a bit between misting.

I found that once a day was enough for me.  Depending on how dry or wet the air is where you are, your mileage may vary.

Yes, that was a bit unclear. It has been extremely hot in my house the last days, 90F.
This and a fan going in the neighboring room makes the surface dry up pretty fast (what's left of my coir+verm casing anyway)

So it has dried up several times a day, so to avoid it drying up too bad while I sleep I have misted the sub again
even though it wasnt dried up.

15 degrees cooler today luckily, so we'll see how much misting is really needed.

the fallen shrooms felt pretty dry, is that a feat of it being ready to harvest but left too long
or is it simply dried up badly and should have been misted sooner?

its homemade, but my go at a sgfc style dub-tub.

I mist my casing layer carefully from close range, then I mist the fruits + casing layer from a feet or 2 away lightly.

The hole pattern is 2" apart vertically but 4" apart horizontally.
I gotta have a fan going when its so warm, and it seems they're getting enough FAE. (casing layer dries up fast)
