Shroom-puter, a fully automatic fruiting chamber made from a wine cooler. * 3
    #19974929 - 05/12/14 06:57 AM (10 years, 8 months ago)

Ok, before I start, a quick message to any newbies, you do not need a fruiting chamber as complicated as this one, a shotgun fruiting chamber is much better if you're just starting out because there is much less to fail.

That said, I grow mushrooms in my shed where there is no heating or cooling, so it is very difficult to control the temperature of the chamber, also the temperature varies both above and below the required fruiting temperature.  Heating a standatd monotub chamber in winter is very difficult, and it is equally difficult to keep the humidity up, whilst still getting good fresh air flow.  I like to build stuff, so I made this fruiting chamber for fun.

I just thought some of you might find it interesting, and perhaps it will give you some inspiration to improve the concept.

Firstly I got a cheap thermoelectric (peltier effect) wine cooler off of Gumtree.

Thermoelectric coolers are great because the cooling element will heat simply by reversing the polarity of the power applied to the element.  This means that with the proper control equipment the chamber can both heat and cool as required.

I replaced the wine racks with some home made wire shelves and installed a humidifier, I also replaced the interior light with a high power LED:

Here's a cool picture of one of my early humidifier tests:

To get clean fresh air exchange I made a mounting block on my 3d printer which fits the HEPA filter from an iRobot Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner, the filters themselves are cheap and easy to get on eBay.  I cut a hole in the cooler and fitted the filter with a 40mm computer fan on the inside.  As you can see in the photos there is a second hole at the bottom of the cooler for exhaust which has a standard fan grate over it which has a foam filter to stop insects from getting in:

I tried to get some controllers off of ebay to control the lighting, temperature, humidity and airflow but they did not work as they should have, so I built and programmed my own digital controller, the SHROOM-PUTER!
The Shroomputer controls the lights, ventilation fan, humidifier and the heating/cooling element. It is fully configurable with the keypad, and automatically takes care of switching the polarity of the thermoelectric element to make it cool or heat as required:

I fitted the Shroomputer to the top of the cooler, and cut a face panel for it to make it look a bit more professional:

It seems to work very well.  I was considering making a batch of shroomputer controllers for sale, but I would need to make about a hundred of them for it to be worthwhile so I decided against it.

I hope you all find this interesting.  Thanks for looking.

:whoah: Wow, what a fun, inventive idea. The Shroom-puter™  :ilold: I thought I had gone overboard on my fruiting chamber - ha! I can't wait to see that baby in action. Please post pics when the time comes. Good luck to you! :growshrooms:

That's quite amazing. How much would one cost with all the components?

Hi FeedYourMind,
I'm not really sure what the entire cost was, I got the wine fridge for 50 bucks, the HEPA filter for about $2 and the rest was made from bits and pieces I had lying around, or made myself.

If the control box (the black box on top of the cooler) was made professsionally it would probably cost around $200.

I just thought id post back seeing as it's been about a year and a half since I built this chamber.  It seems to work extremely well, although, I have had to do a bit of maintenance to it.  The fan for the cooler/heater had to be replaced, the humidity sensor had to be replaced, and I had to replace the humidifier with a pond-fogger in a plastic container because the high-humidity environment disagrees with the electronics in a standard humidifier.

But it is still going strong, here are some photos of the latest grow:

Of course it may look like these are psychedelic mushrooms, they're not. That's just the lighting and camera angle, they're just some wild toadstools from around here that I enjoy growing.

Dear Sheriff,

If you're not gonna be selling the shroomputers, would you mind posting the details of the construction and program parameters?

It would be a real waste to let this be left unshared!

Cheerio

2 things man first this member was last seen back in 2016 so good luck getting a reply out of him. 2nd a SGFC will get you just as good if not better results for a lot less money and effort.
This thing looks bad ass and is probably convenient but unnecessary nonetheless.

This thread has been closed.

Reason:
Old thread, if OP comes back send me or any mod a Pm if you want it unlocked.

Looks like just another shitty automated setup built by someone without enough growing experience to realistically design any automation

Hi JohnSON,
Thanks for your interest.  I have posted the design (PCB Layout and firmware source code) on GitHub at: https://github.com/mp035/shroom-puter

I think I have a couple of printed circuit boards left.  I'd be happy to trade one of them for a good (P.C.) spore print if you have one.  PM me if your interested.  I'm in Australia, so only prints are legal, I promise I will only use them for microscopy .

The chamber worked so well I had a glut of mushrooms so I stopped growing for about 12 months.  Sorry for my absence. I've finally used up my supply and had an issue with Trichoderma so I logged in to look for some advice.

BTW, I worked out that the internal fan on the peltier cooler is a bad idea.  It collects all of the airborne spores and recirculates them.  If you're going to try to make one of these uncover the peltier heatsink and remove the internal fan.  Leave the external one working.

This is a valid point. I made this chamber because our houses in the part of Australia where I live are not heated or cooled.  It works very well for me because it keeps a very constant temperature (within 1-2 degrees C of 25.5), it keeps the insects out, and it keeps the humidity up.

If you live in the USA (like gizmo1), you can definitely get away with an SGFC used indoors.

Thank you.

Tubs tend to get insects in them where I live, and the temperature varies wildly.  I can get good results with a heated tub in winter when there are very few insects around.

The climate controlled chamber lets me grow at any time of the year.  I might try hpoo in a plastic cake tray to get a larger yield.

I consider 25C to be uncomfortable and my fruits get to enjoy the same temps I do which is around 19 C. 25C is actually going to favor bacteria and molds.

Hmm definitely could be worse. Some tweaks might make for decent conditions. Still hugely impractical for most people but it's better than most attempts in this vein.
