I knew this was gonna happen
    #1996415 - 10/10/03 10:02 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

After an unexpected swing in temperature, my mostly colonized PF cakes have begun fruiting some mushrooms inside the jars (largest one being about an inch or so). Now, there is still uncolonized substrate here... so I'm afraid that if I birth them in to the terrarium now, they'll get quite contaminated. If I do birth them, I assume I should cut off the uncolonized parts. Being a first time grower, I'm not prepared to case the substrate (I don't think I could do a good job of it right now). So I'm sort've in a bind. Any suggestions?

Case in plain verm eh? How does that compare to making a coir/verm/lime casing? I'm also not sure how to prepare a terrarium for a casing.

You can fruit the first flush in the jar if you want to. Invitro pinning isn't pretty but it works. This way, the jar could keep colonizing. There's nothing wrong with birthing after the first flush.

Does the cake get kind've... gunky... if it's left in for the first flush? My concerns are as follows:

What exactly happens to the shrooms that grow in the jar? Do they abort?

Do the aborts rot and get all gunky and make for a nasty cake?

no, just let it colonise, till the first shrooms ae opening up the round cap at the top. Then case the thing in 60/40 coir:verm

if you have uncolonized substrate still in the jar and the mushroom does rot you will easily get contams. Case in plain verm after cutting out uncolonized portions and picking pin.

I just don't really feel like I'm prepared to case this thing, and I know now that's the best answer. In spite of that, I'll entertain the idea and try and do that. Now, both a coir/verm and plain verm casing layer has been suggested, why these two different suggestions? Is it just a matter of preference or does it have anything to do with my situation or the PF style BRF cakes I'm using?

New question:

In regard to what sort of container I purchase, do any have any particular advantages in terms of sterility or otherwise? The last thing I want to have happen is to see the cakes (which have made it this far, I'm glad) get contaminated all in one fell swoop (I'll have three cased containers... two cakes per container).

I've not been able to gather from my reading what the prefered terratium is for a cake. Right now the materials available to me include a terrarium, perlite, growing lights (hallogens... used for growing pot) a couple regular lights, and a 1x1' heating blanket.

At this point I really have asked quite a few questions, so if it's clear I need to re-read a few things I'll certainly take the time to do so. These are just the holes I'd like to fill in before I embark on this.

"I've not been able to gather from my reading what the prefered terratium is for a cake."

er/cake/casing

...as well as other random errors in gramar and spelling. Apologies, I forgot to spell check.

forget the hallogens. Ambient light or even a 50 watt incandescent will suffice. Any container will do for the casing just don't make it too big a container for the amount of cakes you will birth. this is a risky project so be prepared to start again. It sucks after making it far but failure is part of the hobby. Just learn and try again.Best of luck thought. Verm or coir is up to you depending on money you want to spend. 60/40 verm/coir mix has been used very effectively by many people. But, yes it is preference. The heating pad is good if your house is very cold otherwise 70-76 degrees should be fine.

is it worth investing in a 'humidity gauge' or should I just be able to tell by the temperature, behavior of the cased cakes, and the amount of dew on the sides of the terrarium?

A foaf had 4 mycobags that were 80% colonized, yet mushrooms were growing in it like crazy. He busted open the bag, took them all off, and put them in the terrarium.

1st flush: 23g dry
2nd flush: 39g dry
3rd flush: doing it tonight, looks like it'll be 50g

No contams to speak of.

What/where is the procedure for making a casing using just vermiculite?

Is it just a dry layer on top and a moist layer on the bottom, vice versa, or something like that?
