shrooms in Eureka/Arcata area
    #1995577 - 10/10/03 12:43 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I'm going to Eureka (north coast california) area in a couple of days. I was wondering if anyone has found liberty caps or cyanofibrillosa yet. Or possibly cyanescens in this area. What are the chances I'll come back empty handed? It did rain the last 2 days

the odds of you comming home emptyhanded depend largely on your understanding of respective habbitats for these species and the rescent weather.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

In 1983, there were ovr about three hundred pounds of P. cyanescens and p. cyanaofibrilosa along I-5 between Eureka and Arcada. A good friend of mine picked most of them, ddried them up, bagged them and then a few months later learned they had all lost their potency to improper drying. They did not really dry correctly and moisture remained in eack dried pound bag he and his friend had tried to preserve,. So at least you know that those species are there, especially in new mulched areas.

Good luck hunting.

Liberty Caps are further up north for the most part, Del Norte and Northern Humboldt....The Elk Fields are usually popping...for Cyans....mostly "secret" spots...there are the usual haunts that everyone knows, Samoa Dunes, Garberville, North Jetty, Guintoli, the Coast Guard Station-->>(skkkkkkketchy!), but the good spots are the lesser known...my fave for the last 5 years couldn't be a more public, open spot (at least for 5 days of the week) but I pull pounds every year from just the one place....good luck, Happy Hunting !!!! :crazy2:
