THe electronic music scene...

In my area bothers me a lot. I do enjoy EDM and attend events when i can. What I see is a stark difference between the fans of EDM and the fans at say a grateful dead oriented or phish show. Very little dancing. People milling about and pairing (grouping) off to their cars and dark corners to snort drugs and talking shit about so-and-so producer and such and such dj. No one slinging hugs, no one looking you in the eye, no belly laughter, no love. Bunch of sneering, smirking little coke babies.
Also they take LSD and research chemicals indiscriminately and know almost nothing about what they're doing. Even at small parties there's always someone who goes too far and gets weird and/or obnoxious... and the kids friends invariable take photos and poke fun at them.
Is this different else where.
I've known these kids for years and can talk to them on an individual basis, it's just when they get together to "rage" they all act like a bunch of turds.

electronica is my shit. So many groups, so many different styles.
Never seen the live seen for it, but it seems dominated by high schoolers and egomaniacs.
I remember hearing Amon Tobin for the first time, while on LSD for the first time. Shit changed my life

but if you guys are into psychedelic rock type stuff, Ozric Tentacles is really special. No record label, 30 albums, great live. And original tunes
They have reallyy quality synths on top of the talented instrumentalists

I KNOW!
I freaking LOVE acid breaks, acid house and funky old house music.
And the whole genre defying IDM thing (fourtet, nobukazu takemura, autechre etc...)
But at this point I'd rather stay in and spin a record.

Most electronic shows I've been to in my area have had a pretty good crowd, never a scummy vibe like you're talking about.
But then, I don't go to shitty "EDM" events.

thats true. While EDM has a decent foundation, its transformed a lot over the years. More of a mainstream term now. And as we all know, mainstream usually leads to lesser quality tunes.
same with IDM. my first favorite IDM guy was U-Ziq. Him and luke vibert/wagon christ

Bummer.
There's a cool scene/crowd/vibes among the parties/undergrounds/festivals I go to around the area, but at the same time there are other circles that I've walked into that felt really fake and empty and similar to what you described. Maybe you just have to find a different circle among the electronic music "scene" , as much as I hate to throw around that word "scene" .
When I hear "EDM" I think of stuff like Electric Daisy Carnival, and other mainstream-commercialized shit show "raves", bros and shitty drugs. While there is still that sort of scene around here, I mostly associate with festivals/parties that have a different crowd....I'm very picky and choosy with what sort of shin digs I attend, I have learned what crews in my area throw legit parties/festivals and have a like minded crowd that's down to get weird.
The dance floor is alive and animated with everyone giggin', eye contact and smiles exchanged on the dance floor, conversation and chatter echoing about the air, giggles and deep hearty laughter around every corner, long hugs exchanged with randoms, lots of art, people bring their stuff to set up chill spaces to share hooka and tea, areas to chill and interact with others, quality legit drugs at fair prices, people happily sharing their high quality drugs, people that are actually educated on the drugs they use, people that can still hold their shit together while being spun on psychedelics...and in the event someone starts to loose their shit or have a rough time, everyone looks out for each other, even the security are chill heads that are just there to look out for everyone and keep shit in check...A crowd that's down to rage it proper and get weird in the best ways possible.
It's like one big family. Shit's magical. Feels like everyone is vibin' on the same wavelength. It's one the few places and times that some faith in humanity gets restored within me .

i pretty much grew up in my city's scene, and i live in a city that's been a long time big name in electronic music if you know anything about it (dallas). so for the past twenty years or so i've seen people bitch about this same shit over and over again as if it's new. they're parties. people get fucked up at parties. if you don't like being around people who get fucked up, don't go to places where those people are.

Exactly. I went to my first rave in 1996, and I can remember people there lamenting about how raves sucked in '96, that the parties had been in decline since '94, LOL. Then I turned 18 in '99 and parties started to suck for me too. They didnt get good again until '07, when I started going to small clubs for dubstep shows. The crowd was mostly older disaffected party kids who were really interested in music. Those parties were funny in that if there were 50 heads there, 35 of them were djs/producers. Then the music itself started to suck. I haven't been to a party in years.

That sounds amazing, like the places ive always wanted to go. I have heard that the underground scene in my city is pretty big, and one of the best around, but unfortuneatly i havent attended one of there events yet. Ive only attended over-the-top frat boy shows were half the people were obnoxiously drunk.
Ive been around, and even been one of the kids who you talked about OP, with no love for anything around them. Its tough being around those people cause the miasma of negativity they create can envelop you. Im glad i dont chill with thay circle anymore.

it really depends on what kinda events your going to...for me personally some shows i do go to have pretty terrible crowds, i usually just rage out back and associate myself with people who i think are cool
clubs always have shitty crowds, but sometimes i just cant miss a specific DJ and i gotta deal with that shit
but then theres festivals which always have way better crowds and always makes me remember why i love this scene

yeah, my first was in '94. there was a big divide between kids from the suburbs and the inner city kids who thought they were more authentic in some silly high school way. i still see some folks from that crowd talking about how great the 90's were in dallas. but to me it was shady and often quite dangerous. because the parties were so remote and its culture was so insular gang violence was very common. typically this was over drugs because there was so much money and all anyone knew how to do is fuck each other over, but sometimes it was over other stuff. i saw a homeless dude get worked over in a parking lot by about ten guys the first time i took lsd. he bought that though. he punched some girl in an alley and it was the boyfriend and his friend who were on him. i honestly couldn't tell you if he lived. i was also at several parties that ended in gunfire. one time i was fired on while standing in line to get into a warehouse. so when i see these old scenesters talking about how great it was back then i just roll my eyes because it was really no place for anyone to be. say what you will about how "commercial" some parts of the scene have become, but in a way those big dumb events have flushed out the criminal power structures that dominated the earlier scenes. at least in my town they did. now if i get out it's for small stuff, typically full of people i've known for 10+ years. and it's all good times. no shootings, stabbings or fights: just how i prefer my parties to be.
