would a Hepa Air purifier in a small air tight room be a sterile environment? would other measures be needed like spraying Oust or Lysol still? http://www.air-zone.com/hepa.html
thanks

You will still need to spray lysol and take additional sterilization precautions. I don't know if the air purifier would help at all but it might.

In a room its unlikely to create a sterile environment, HEPA filters can be used in a 'flowhood' to keep out airborn contams. These work be producing a positive pressure enviroment filled with filtered air.
I have made a flowhood from a pre-built hepa filter and a rubermaid box (with holes cut in it), I have used it with agar plates, I even left a plate exposed for 2 hours to test it, its been over a week now and no sign of contams, so they do work.

r u meaning to say that if i have a room sealed in plastic, with an anti chamber for further contam protection, that a hepa filter would keep an air tight room only like 10' by 10' sterile? wow i though they were awesome. just spray lysol occasionally on surfaces and keep wall and floors clean. i thought it would be perfect.

A hepa air filter would not create a sterlile environment it would only catch fungal spores and alot of dirt in the environment. It also depends on the rating of the filter. 0.2 microns is a pretty good filter, but it doesn't get everything out of the air. I am surprised to read that they are not useful. They will definately help keep your environment's air free of fungal spores that could infest your casings. The problem, however, is that they cost alot. I have read in these forums of people making filters from box fans. I wrote about it briefly in another post titled "lysol vs Oust". Hope this helps

I agree, a HEPA filter filter does not great a truely sterile air flow, it catches the big stuff. What it does though is stack the deck much more in your favor with deskwork ie, innoc, making syringes, working with agar etc..
It would not keep a room safe, for a start is likely that a bloody big mammal is going to be in and out of the place.
I kind of think of working in a meteor shower.
