Perception, Relativity, and Living upside down...
    #1992699 - 10/09/03 10:28 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Me and a friend of mine had one of the neatest conversations the other day, and I thought you guys here would like to hear about it. What started us on the topic is I was outside on my balconey just staring off into the distance and I started thinking about an eagles.

I read somewhere that the reason they can see farther is caused by having bigger eyes. I thought about an experiment that was done a while ago where they took a groyp of people and gave them all that encased their entire vision, flipping everything they perceived (visually) to be upside down. After a certain period of time (I can't recall exactly how long), the people started adjusting to the change and were seeing things right-side-up.

I took that little tidbit and applied it to what I was thinking about with eagles. I the technology was available to transplant eyes, and the approriate changes were made in a human to have larger (eagle) eyes inserted and wired to their brain, I'm assuming the brain would make the neccassary changes to adapt to the new perception tools.

That got my friend to mention that everything we see is flipped upside down by something (I just woke up, can't recall the name), inside of the eye before it goes to our brain for processing. That got us to talking about how everything is upside down.

This is where we started to trip out. Upside down - everything you see is being reversed by our eyes. Trippy thought, no? The cup holding the liquid in front of some of you is not actually being held down, persay, moreso that the gravity of the earth has it clinging towards the greater mass in this pocket of the universe. I just found this really trippy to think about. It's like we're all these ceiling dwelling clumps of water with conciousness hanging onto this rock out in space that's hurtling around in circles on an orbit we can't precisely measure.
I found this to be a pretty creepy thought.

Good and evil loose all objective meaning and are seen as equally necessary and contrasting elements in the masterpiece that is the universe.

It... does flip everything upside down... right? That's crazy!

Trying to imagine the other view, without being flipped, indeed starts to trip one out...
Crazy!
Peace.

it trips me out that the earth is rotating so fucking fast that right now we're moving at incomprehensible speeds. if the earth's gravity lessened enough, we'd fly straight the fuck off the planet and tumble into space

The brain reverses the image coming from the eyes, that's why you don't see things upside down  .
Anyway, the way you explain everything is upside down, triggered my memory. I remember one starry night with a bunch of friends and cubes. While i was tripping it came to my mind gravity working the other way around, i mean, it comes from space and it pushes us against the ground. Next thing i remember, is looking at the stars and my mind started working just as the way my thoughts were telling me, i remember about "falling" into space instead of jumping, my words were "Yes, we are upside down", i felt pulled by the rest of the universe in one single moment of psychoactive madness but it seamed so natural to fall into space that i almost could feel all my body going up...... or is it down... ?

I was lying in a blueberry field on acid once, the stars were just starting to come out. I had this idea of the earth and the universe being inverted, so that the earth's surface (the side we stand on) circled around Space, containing it, and below the surface was... i dunno, other stuff.

Sorta like how Halo was originally set up with the terrain making a huge loop, only an entire sphere like that instead of just one track.

Well just imagine what reality would be if humans didnt have sight, like if we operated like bats, by sound. What if what we considered reality was confined to sound and touch. Or what if the brain didn't translate color waves the way it does. Our reality would be way difreent.

What about this?:

Why does a mirror only reflect left/right (relative to the viewer) and not up/down?

I'm not sure this is exactly how the eye works. But you are right, our orientation and perception of the universe is really amazing. And gravity, and light, and sound and fucking everything is amazing.

at this point i think we can be relatively certain seperation exists as a fallacy of finite perception, and the only barrier to infinite creativity is a preimposed notion of certainty and artificial conditioning. nothing is without origin

A mirror can't reflect light up/down relative to the viewer.  The angle of reflection denies it.  If you are looking at the bottom of a mirror, you wouldn't expect to see the top of the mirror.

The left/right reflection is due to the light taking the only path from the source (your hand) to the destination (your eyes), along the mirror's angle of reflection.

Try taking a flashlight to a mirror and you'll see what I mean.

The reason that the eye flips images upside down is because you have a lens in your eye that all light travels through. If you know anything about lenses, then you know that light/images that go through a lens appear upside down. So a mirror doesn't do this because it is totally different than a lens.

yup, the brain is just correctly interpreting the light that hits the bottom of the eye as coming from above your head, from the top of your field of vision.
