I saw this a couple of months ago and thought it was pretty fucking cool. It's amazing how top-down effects from a keystone species can shape an entire system.
Something to think about: nothing inhabits an environment without altering it in some way.

To annihilate wolves back in the day people used to chase and heard packs of wolves onto mountains and then set the whole mountain on fire to kill them.

I have read that putting pressure on wolves by hunting them can actually increase their population sizes because it encourages other females than just the alpha to breed.

Makes perfect sense as long as not overhunted. It increases the available food supply and range requirements for the individual animal. So yes the females would tend to produce larger litters temporarily re-populating what a given area will support. And what it won't support either dies off or moves on.

I live in Idaho and am all for the trophy hunting of wolves.
About 10-15 years ago, Canadian, non-native wolves were released in an effort to help the species grow. However, they're now rampant in the wilderness and there are far too many for the ecosystem to handle. I have a cabin in the middle of nowhere in the Sawtooth mountains and used to see huge herds of elk every time I went up there. I haven't seen an elk in the past couple years I've gone now, and definitely never a herd. Wolves are killing off the deer and elk population and thus we need some regulation here, which has become the introduction of wolf tags.
There are only a few instances of wolves coming into he towns where farms are, so the idea of farmers losing their livestock is overstated. The main problem is losing the other wildlife which the wolves are thriving on.

Wolves are hella cool. They are the epitome of strength and brotherhood. Also are a really interestin keystone species to study. Here in Arizona, they state legislature has been trying to overturn a law passed in the 80s that protected the Mexican Gray Wolves. Still only a hundred or two or them left in the US and are still considered an endangered species

I heard some stories about guys in Idaho throwing meat with treble hooks out for the wolves to eat.
