got a prob with a casing, help please.

need a bit of advice over here, i had 4 extra jars of the standard pf tek colonized and decided to case them.

they were done 2 half pints to each container, which were the tops of those 50 cd spindles, moist verm on bottom, crumble the cakes and then verm and coir on top. put on syran wrap and poke holes with a syringe and put in the dark at 80 plus.

3 days later and i have cobweb breaking out on the tops of both of them. now can or should i do anything to try and save them? the breakout is about the size of a 25 cent piece. also can see the myc breaking through.

i also did 3 popcorn casings at the same time in the same containers and they look fine so far. and the other 6 jars (that were not cased) were birthed into a terrarium and they are also look fine.

any advice from you folks?

thanks in advance

Dig off the layer of contaminated area, and be sure to remove all the infected area. Be carefull not to disturb it and drop any contaminated casing onto the remaining casing. Next time better sterilize your coir, boil for a good hour, and don't work in the same environment, maybe your air was contaminated with some nasty spores.

when casings contaminate it almost always due to the substrate rather than the casing material. most likely the cakes you broke up were not quite colonised in the middle, inviting contams. IME once a casing looks infected, it's far too late to do anything about it. ditch 'em.

dont trash your casing...look up the methods of using salt to fight contams...or try cutting out the infected part and 'paint' it with peroxide...it will fizz and bubble for a while, but it will kill the contams, and the myc should recolonise the treated area.

peroxide is very effective against cobweb. Just cut out the infected area and spray with 50/50 peroxide and water. You may not even have cobweb. Mycelium growing through a casing layer can look very cobweby. Better safe than sorry though.

thanks to all for the advice.

i went with the sterile spoon and scoop approach. i scooped out the cobweb and then hit the spot with a 50/50 h202 water mix.

24 hours later one seems fine and the other has redevolped the cobweb. man that stuff grows fast. going to try and remove it again on the bad casing. i guess it can't hurt anything to try.

thanks again.
