Nice plant, SuperD. Why do you keep it so low on the pot?

I usually fill the soil up to the top line in all my pots but this particular crest had such a shallow root system, I was able to get away with using a lot less soil this time around.  When I repot I'll probably fill it up all the way if the roots are looking like they need more space.

I had been hand sifting some soil for one of my soil mixes I use so I try not to waste any of it because it takes a lot of time to process all of it.

I understand completely the part of not wanting to waste any of our hard earned mix, I do that myself apart from driving considerable distances so I can get the ingredients I'm looking for. My question had directly to do with the species, I find Gymnocalycium (the few I have, at least) to have surprisingly long, if not fat, root systems. If your plant was a rooted cutting, you may well be in for a surprise when you repot it (but don't read this as en encouragement to do it. I hate repotting too often).

Thanks for the heads up, I appreciate the info.  I have noticed my other non-crested gymnos do have fat roots so it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if this one gets crammed a little faster than the others.  I only potted this one and a few others with shallow soil and the rest have all of their pots filled to the top.  The same day I was repotting these was the day I didn't have much of my custom soil left so I used it as sparingly as possible.  Note taken on the root system though, thanks for letting me know.  I don't know much detailed info on very many species and gymnos are certainly one of them that I'm not intimately familiar with.

I love the first one. It's so lovely. How old is it and is it seed grown?

Some of these flowers look so amazing I swear they appear photoshopped, although I know they aren't.  Truly impressive stuff guys.

MOLD???

Hey guys I have some baby lophs at right around 3 months which have been sealed with moist soil in tubaware away from direct sun light. Nothing has been added to my cactus soil since I purchased it besides a light dose of water.

Ive noticed that some of the white  pellets in my soil, have turned to a green. To be clear, its only 2 of these "pellets" out of maybe 200, but i certainly noticed it. What steps should I take? Do i need to let them breath fresh air finally?

Algae... you can leave them be until the soil is overrun by algae, put a layer of sand over the algae, or open up and let the soil dry out a bit; H2O2 might help.

Turn green pellets upside down. Green algae grow only at surface where is light.

Anyway, it's not harmful. My seedling trays have always algae and moss, never seen it's bad for seedlings.. After transplant and starting drought cycles algae will vanish anyway.

They are fairly slow to form a big clump so it must be some age, a big root on it too. A lady was clearing out her greenhouse to make room for enlarging her succulent collection so I was only happy to oblige and absorb many into mine.

Another flower for today, this was from the same collection. Came with the label Echinofossulocactus guerraianus
