Lava rocks or Geo-lite
    #1989726 - 10/08/03 10:40 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Question whether Lava rocks would work just as well as geo-lite or not?
Just the fact being that geo-lite is not as easily available as lava rocks.

thanx

I have read that there are different types of lava rock, is there one that should be preferred over others?

The one's I did my tests with were the ones you put in the front yard. They come in red or black and cost like 3 to 4 bucks a bag. I used both and mixed them cause it looked cool.

Well looks like perlite is the frontrunner for me right now  :frown:  Mail order is pretty much out of the question.  But I dont mind driving...if anyone knows where you can buy geo-lite, hydroton, or lava rocks within 150 miles of Philly then Im there!

If there's a hydro shop in Philly there is geolite of hudroton.

Keep using perlite. Lava rock can harbor contams.

Hey Magash, how big were the pieces of lava rock was that? The size of a pea, quarter, or potato?

The contams live in the larger holes in the lava rock. The holes are too small in perlite. There are lots of nasty contams that are large enough to live in lava rock that can be immune to hydrogen peroxide. A perfect example: mushroom mycelia is large enough to live in lava rock add water and it flourishes. H2O2 will only slow growth. Mycelia has been known to strengthen itself after being exposed to H2O2, that can also work both ways, with contams. But if you are hell bent on using lava rock, add bleach instead of H2O2, bleach is a stronger disinfectant.

Well I guess I have to get rid of the geolite then. Ever seen a broken piece the holes are the same size. Hmmm...I'm glad contams can't just hide in between the perlite pieces. The holes in perlite can hide contams were talking microscopic here.

As far as what grow stuff first put some wet lava rock in the light and some wet perlite and watch which grows alge first.

The only thing I can find that perlite has on lava rock is that it's lighter, and it has nothing on geolite other than price. Which comes back in the long run cause it's reusable.

Oh no I just bought the red lava rock that Magash spoke of! Now I am going to be paranoid about contams! What should I use and how should I clean/sterilize them before I put them in my terrarium? This is going to worry me to no end...

Your fine don't worry about it. Many here use lava rock already. Lava Rock is no more prone to contams then geolite or perlite.
