Portland OR ID assist
    #19892792 - 04/24/14 11:56 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Habitat: growing in wood chips in a garden  in Portland, OR. Picked on April 23, a particularly rainy day.

Gills: see photos.

Stem: see photos attached. Hollow.

Cap: see photos attached.

Spore print color: I took two: one was orange-brown the other was purple-black.

Bruising: earlier pick had slight blue bruising. The mushrooms from this pick did not bruise so much.

Other information: I am torn between P. ovoideocystidiata and A. dura.

So is that bluing on the cap margin I see? Hard to tell. I want to say ovoids but you would definitely see some blue if they were.

My sarcasm is broken. Does that mean I'm way off? I have experience with novice ID, but the small browns stymie me. I legitimately want to learn. At this point it is less about sharing these with friends and more about verifying that either (a) I still don't get it or (b) I've learned something after flipping through field guides for a week.

So I humbly ask: what is this?

Also, That is bluing on the cap margins.

Lol, they are definitely Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata. We sometimes get off topic but yeah your mushrooms are active.

Previous pick is now super blue. Now that everything is trimmed up and drying, what should I do with the mycelium and stem ends?

Sandwich them between a wet piece of cardboard and put it in an open zip-lock for about a week, at that point you can break it up and put them around town where you would like ovoids to grow or get some wood-chips and start your own patches.

Great find. So far I'm pretty sure there is only one public ovoid patch in Portland.  That's awesome you found it.  Please be aware this is most likely the Portland mother patch you've stumbled upon.  Take some genetics but not too much.  It's up to us to protect and spread the myc.  Please respect the patch.  We coulda cleaned it up by now.  But it has been left for others.  As you should leave it to do it's thing. Also remember scissors.  That way only the fruit you want is disturbed.  Welcome to the shroomery.

I'm pretty sure that's biologically impossible anyway, also ovoids spread like wildfire.

Well technically there is more than one patch in Portland.  I know of at least 15.  But they are in the same "area".  I would bet; on the fact, there aren't any other public ovoid patchs that I have not seen in portland.
The dense scattered patches in a local area in my book are the same mother patch.  Should I look at them as individual patches?  How many feet or how big of a boarder or separation do they need.

i could see if I found a group a few feet away that expressed different characteristics I might consider it a differnt patch.  Maybe I've been using the word patch incorrectly.  My huckleberry patch is a very large area.  And there are large distances between groupings of bushes.  But I don't say that I'm going to my huckleberry patches.
So I am curious.  Do I need to go hunt for your patch Maynard? Lol

Since some of you appear to live in my general climate, would you have tips on drying? I airdried mine over two-three days and they went from thumb sized to the size of a pencil eraser. Cracker dry is not measurable since they're also hard as an eraser. Also, I haven't tried the dried yet, but what do you think about adjusting dosage?

Psilocybe's do lose some potency when dried, but they should still be fine.  I don't know what species you're talking about so I wouldn't venture a guess as to how to adjust the dosage.  Maybe take what you normally take and see how that works, if you then feel like you want some more then eat some more.

I say it's always smart to not eat enough than to eat too much at once.  You can always eat more to increase the effects, but you can't decrease the effects of a does that was larger than you were prepared to handle.
